Con Air
Lack of air, producer Jerry Bruckheimer in the overall follow-up in 1996 in the blockbuster, The Rock, this kind of picture that critics refer to when they moan about the “dumbing down” of American cinema. This film is an excellent example of what happened to many big-budget films today: neither the characters nor the intellect, and, worst of all, little fun. While director Simon West Con Air intends to be a comic book come to life, it lacks the visual flair and imagination of all but the most trite comic. The film is based on a spectacular fireworks displays, but it has been a long time since a well-executed explosion enraptured audience. Lack of air is noisy and flashy, but that could be said about any of the many, same-genre pictures, screens that come every year. What the film lacks is tension and excitement to go along with all the bangs. The action sequences are presented in a pedestrian fashion, and there are too few cases in which we believe that the main character is in any real danger.
Our hero is Cameron Poe (Nicolas Cage), the ex-Army Ranger and Desert Storm veteran, who spent the last eight years in prison serving a sentence for murder (he accidentally killed a man who threatened his pregnant wife). Now he has been paroled and is on his way home to be reunited with his wife and meet his daughter for the first time. One problem: it is in flight has a load of vicious criminals linked to the detention at the new prison in Alabama. They get loose and seize aircraft, and suddenly finds himself taking orders from Cameron Kira Council Virus “Grissom (John Malkovich), the self-proclaimed” poster child for the criminally insane. “Meanwhile, on land, on behalf of the United States Marshal Vince Larkin (John Cusack ) trying to bring the situation to a peaceful conclusion, despite interference from the federal agent (Colm Meaney), who wants to shoot down aircraft.
At least Lack of air not so obvious bad as turbulence. First, this film has several assets that had previously “terror in the sky” movie lacks: Nicolas Cage and John Cusack. Despite the fact that the subjects of his career, far better here (in fact, it often looks bored Cage), trite, acting of the two is preferable to what we have received from Ray Liotta and Lauren Holly. In fact, a very colorful performances belong to the actors playing criminals. In addition to Malkovich in predatory Kir (a role that he could probably do in his sleep), Ving Rhames gives us an unpleasant black militant Diamond dog named Jones, Steve Buscemi is at its best creepy as Marietta Mangler, and Danny Trejo is a serial rapist with a tattoo on his hand for each of his victims. (Incidentally, in the film ambiguous attitude toward Buscemi character, a child killer, is alarming.)
Lack of air divides the characters on well-defined groups of good and bad (with members of the latter category far outnumbering the number of the former). Unsurprisingly, with no shades of grey, there is not an interesting character. Cameron, a candidate for sainthood, has an impeccable record - even murder, which sent him in prison was warranted. He is too pure to be anything but bland, and, even worse, Scott Rosenberg script does not give him any of the one line that we have come to expect from the action heroes in such films. He, like John McLane of the Die Hard wisecracking without charisma.
Another thing that mention of the disadvantage in the air is how bad it is corrected together. In his recent review of the film Rough Magic, film critic Roger Ebert made the remark that “This is a clich and talk about great visuals, as if you point the camera in the right direction, you can do almost anything looks.” Somehow, the cinematographer Con Air (with help from the editor) managed to disprove that theory. Except for a few beautifully composed shots, the movie look equally outdated.
Action films are usually appreciated for their tremendous special effects, and their ability to keep viewers on the edge of their seats. Lack of air lagging behind in both categories. Indeed, for some scenery-chewing bit more-on-top parties and a few mildly engaging chase sequence, there is little here to justify the seemingly endless two hours length. Sitting through this movie look like a dog works in circles chasing its tail - in the entertainment factor is dying quickly, as the situation becomes repetitive. If you are desperate for a way to kill time, Con Air is one flight you can afford to miss.
