City of Ghosts
It was only a matter of time before Matt Dillon took a seat at the Board of Directors chair. This is really surprising that the actor who, at 41, looks the way most wanted men they looked at the 31-didn’t catch the mistake before, having worked with directors such as Francis Ford Coppola distinguished (Outsiders and Rumble Fish) , Cameron Crowe (tennis), and Gus Van Sant (Drugstore Cowboy and To Die For).
The bigger surprise is how to make Dillon is behind the camera. Like many actor-turned-director projects, the city Ghosts focus on character development. In particular, it monitors developments Dillon character, the low-life named Jimmy, which begins as immoral and insurance scammer… ends well, it gets it gets interesting. When the FBI asked him to convey his passport, Jimmy skips to Southeast Asia, connecting with his sleazy associate Kaspar (Stellan Skarsgard).
But Jimmy is not easy to get away. He is trying to find Marvin (James Caan), who, in addition to Jimmy in an underground leader, as his mentor, best friend and, in all likelihood, his illegitimate father. Marvin also obliged Jimmy few million dollars, bringing the guy enough evidence to track him down.
The problem is, Marvin hiding in Pnomh Penh, Cambodia. In contrast to the relative safety of second world Thailand and Vietnam State Police, Cambodia remains dangerous. Ex-soldiers Khmer Rouge roam the countryside, kidnapping nothing YOUTH. When their relatives are unable to pay a ransom, the bandits with their implementation one of the millions of guns that litter in the country.
Inside Pnomh Penh, generals, which has become a rule politicos openly and covertly, growing rich on dubious deals with foreign businessmen. One particularly ominous former general, played by Chalee Sankhavesa, enters into a partnership with Marvin rebuild an abandoned casino. To attract foreign tourists, the casino would give only kind of work in Cambodia, as well as assault with a weapon firing range and the park are equipped with a hunting endangered species.
But that Marvin and Jimmy, who were hunting; last Khmer battery, which may or may not work for Kaspar, a former three Russian Mafiosi. In subtropical atmosphere becomes even sticker when Marvin disappears, a mysterious package arrives, a rag-tag cast of characters enter the picture. Are cheerfully dishonest French hotel (s G rard Depardieu), and beautifully hand archaeologist (Natascha McElhone) friends or enemies? I can Sok (Sereyvuth Kem), Jimmy in cyclo driver as a kind heart, as he seems? And what about the monkeys, resulting in the theft of Jimmy things?
Co-written by Dillon and David Lynch Officer Barry Gifford, the city Ghosts borrows freely from a superior ex-pat thrillers as Wages of fear, the danger of God, St. Jack, and “Quiet American. Ghosts No city does not drape its setting in the artificial exotics. As the first foreign film shot in Cambodia in nearly 40 years, it should not be. Full sun-drenched dusty golds and russets, Jim Denault in cinematography makes everything on screen look intriguingly alien, a gorgeously dilapidated French villas on the mystical Khmer wats that, that the point of the landscape.
Watching the beauty on the screen, it is easy to forget how predictable Ghosts of the city can be. But even though the film noir stock removes many elements, it is still a pleasure to watch. City Ghosts may not be a year, in the original film, but for the most part, Dillon skillfully captured stay a stranger in the strange land.
