City of Angels

In the world hurtles towards the end of the second millennium, it seems, is to raise awareness of the mystic and spiritual things. Suddenly, it was fashionable to believe in God (not necessarily a specific god - an amorphous, religious deities do not), one after, and, of course, angels. In the entertainment industry, and not one to be left to any trends, has thrown himself on this rampant. On TV, the cloying “Looking Angel” is a hit - the basis of many people on Sunday evening viewing plans. I jumped on the bandwagon film also gives us enough celestial beings in the past few years, the head of a pin to the crowd - Michael, The preacher’s wife, Wide Awake, and now the city of angels. Add movies that feature Satan and his minions (such as Devil’s Advocate and the Fallen), or less clearly defined the problem of death (for example, communications and The Sweet Here), and the list of names explodes.

Most American-made films based on the foreign originals, as a rule, huge disappointment. I could probably name 15 or 20 examples, but I will limit myself to two of them are obvious: The Vanishing and Diabolique, both of which were so bad that they were offensive. There were exceptions, of course. In Birdcage was nice Americanization La Cage language Folles. Sommersby done some interesting things with the return of Martin Guerre. And now City of Angels actually worked again (not again), Wim Wenders’ 1988 art-house classic, sky over Berlin, taking some of the previous film more meditative elements and deepening the romantic aspect. End completely, and surprising that different.

City of Angels basis, and not surprisingly, in Los Angeles, which is the literal “City of Angels”, the invisible celestial agents meeting high atop skyscrapers and billboards. Dressed as Heaven’s Men in Black, the Angels are odd bunch. They spend their days and nights observing, and sometimes offering comfort to select people. They can not touch, taste or smell. They are immortal and ether. They live in the library and spend time on the beach, in a kind of wordless communication.

Seth (Nicolas Cage) is just one of many Angels set in Los Angeles. But, unlike most of his brethren, he has a strong desire to experience what he wanted to be a man. He seems to share the view that it belongs to the fellow angel Cassiel (Andre Braugher): “What good will wings, if you could not feel the wind on your face?” One day, Seth is in the hospital dying man for the administration in the next life. His definition captured the attention of a doctor, Maggie Rice (Meg Ryan), to save the life of the patient. Later, he returned with the intention of calming Maggie in distress, but it will be a difficult task. Soon, he spends long hours watching her, eventually revealing itself as a charitable stranger. Set fell in love with Maggie, but he believes that this proposal is doomed until angel, which has become a person (Dennis Franz), shows that God gives all of his creations will, and if Seth wants him enough, he may shed its wings for the human body. But only because Seth loves Maggie, there is no guarantee that it would reciprocate his feelings, and if he gives his immortality for romantic illusions that then?

When it comes to the heavenly matters, City of Angels does not offer any specific ideas. The film does not reflect on the meaning of life, but rather, it shamelessly celebrates the human experience, demonstrating the endless monotony of voyeurism. On somewhat less-intellectual level, but also the victim. But the movie does not thrive only on the basis of ideas (if she tried, it would be in trouble because it is not that deep). Solid acting and the positive chemistry are critical to the city of angels’ success.

Nicolas Cage well as Seth, but there are times when he does not quite fit Angela shoes. Cage well as separate observer, watching and waiting, but there is a quality of childlike innocence to Seth that he did not quite pull off. There is one place in the city of angels that much of the canceled This is one beautiful life, and it shows how much more persuasive was James Stewart. Meg Ryan, as always, charming and ebullient as Maggie. This is a perfect example of casting - I can only think of a few other actresses who, as well as Ryan in that role. Its range - desperation and hope, pain and rapture - places her work in the city of angels along that the Prelude to a Kiss and courage under fire, as evidence that it is a capable, well-rounded dramatic talents. Meanwhile, in a supporting role (the one essayed Peter Falk in the sky over Berlin, and its continuation, Faraway So Close), a scene-stealing Dennis Franz is delightful as the king of hedonism.

I suspect City of Angels is going to remind many viewers of Ghost, but there is a big difference: this movie is more true to a lesser extent, to manipulate. (In tone, although not necessarily in its content, he reminded me of Truly Madly Deeply.) Eventually, a tear-jerker, but there is more to it than that. Although the film is not as effective as the sky over Berlin in developing the Angels’ culture and presenting meditation on spirituality, it gives us a couple of well-developed individuals worth about withdrawal and the establishment of complex dynamic between them. City of Angels is a deeper, What a romantic, but Dana Stevens’ script is thoughtful and smart, and I never felt so humiliated that the characters say, do or think. Director Brad Silberling, who had earlier made another supernatural tale, the live-action Casper, in fact, that indicates spiritual / duality of the material world. This is a subdued picture, but the lack of overt melodrama doing to promote and attract story. Even for those who enraptured at the Wings of Desire, “City of Angels is strong enough to cast its own quiet romantic spell.
