Cinderella II - Dreams Come True
For more than 50 years after they produced their first feature-length film - in the 1937 Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs - Disney is not a single extension of any of these efforts. While many of these films were huge hits, each new proposal has taken on a different story, previously unexplored. Yes, it could be argued that the 1945 Three Caballeros thus acted as a continuation in 1943 Saludos friends, but this is not quite true. They share some of the characters, but does not offer real plot, but basically conglomerations of related shorts.
That began to change in 1990 with the release of The Rescuers Down Under. Some will argue it was not real Continuation or, as he in fact did not pursue the story, she presented some of the same characters, but does not move along the plot develops.
However want to see the semantics of the case, the fact remains that Down Under obvious broke the taboo on the studio. Then they gradually become more and more enamored of the implications for their big screen hits. As of the beginning of 2002, only two, not Down Under debuted in theaters: Return to Neverland recently, and 1999 in Toy Story 2.
Otherwise, all they had to “direct-to-video (DTV) route. It started in 1994 in Return of Jafar, continued in 1992 in the smash Aladdin. Actually, Jafar came as a continuation of a current Aladdin then television programme. Apparently this has been very good, and the third flick - called Aladdin and the King of Thieves - led in 1996.
Buoyed by the positive financial returns, Disney got gradually more and more in the DTV effects on the large screen animated offerings. In 1997, the release of Beauty and the Beast: Enchanted On Christmas, a tale that is actually happening at the time of the story told in 1991 hit. 1998 brought us two DTV consequences: Pocahontas II: Journey to the New World - a spin-off of 1995 flick - but as a “Lion King II: Simba in Pride, the extension of the 1994 picture, which remains the highest-grossing animated film of all time .
You may notice a pattern in these releases. They all came from recent films, and that the practice continued through the next few years. In addition to the Toy Story 2 - which was originally scheduled as DTV offering - the studio knock Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, on the renewal of the 1989 smash.
This scheme makes sense for several reasons. First, they could use most of the same talent in the theatrical release. Some notable absence did not happen, and you do not hear Mel Gibson in Pocahontas II and Robin Williams in Jafar, but he was enticed back to the phone for the thief. (Dan “Homer Simpson” Castellanetta processed for Genie Jafar and serials.)
Moreover, although the film had been extended through the consequences of large hits, and generally, they do not have a long time to “classic” status enjoyed by films from Disney in the past. The new material based on the latest flicks do not seem to be stretch, but if the studio went further, back to their store for inspiration, the situation is likely to become stickier. Older fans may not be wild to their childhood favorites once again for new publications.
But that did in the studio. It began with 2001’s Lady and the Tramp II: Scamp in Adventure - continued in 1955 treasure - Disney began to raid the archives. In addition to the Return to Neverland - as DTV project, but eventually released theatrically - Disney seems to have DTV consequences to 1967, in The Jungle Book and 1961 in 101 Dalmatians, and in 1941 Dumbo in the works. They also make new tales based on the latest flicks like in the Hunchback of Notre Dame and Tarzan.
Personally, I am still not quite sure how I feel about these extended study. On the one hand, I always liked the idea of the consequences that tell us what has happened to the characters later. Many flicks show participants involved in the major life events, changes, and I think it can be fascinating to learn how to deal with those after the fact. It may sound silly, but I like to know what happened to the victims of something like ID4, I mean, after you go through all that drama, as you deal with this?
But on the other hand, I can agree with those who see the consequences of cheapening the originals. It is very rare that will be more true than with the latest Disney DTV Continuation, Cinderella II: Dreams Come True. In extending the 1950 classic - one of the most respected studio precious stones - we learned just what happened to Cindy after Prince Charming took her to live a happy life for centuries eyelids.
If you were expecting some dirt - like Cindy (Jennifer Heil expressed here) gets all hit her hubby (Christopher Daniel Barnes), - you certainly disappointed. In fact, if you expect a single coherent narrative, you will be disappointed. Instead of Dreams consists of three short vignettes, all connected by one common device.
In the beginning, we will meet with our old friend Jacques mice and Gus (Rob Paulsen and Corey Burton). They miss time with a story about the Fairy Godmother (Russi Taylor), and agreed that the mouse must create their own book about his adventures with Cindy. From there, we call in the next three mini-stories:
Once Cindy and the Prince of return from honeymoon, she learns she must plan a big royal ball. Her head Prudence (Holland Taylor) tells her about how she should act. “Cinderella” is not having, as will be someone she’s not, so eventually she decided to follow her own thoughts, and everyone is happy, even if it makes some things mildly unconventional;
Jacques becomes disappointed in his inability to effectively assist “,” Cinderella. “He wishes he was bigger, and it makes the Fairy Godmother in order to achieve this goal. Jacques soon learned of the pitfalls and be happy returns to his old form of a mouse, and then it solves the problem, as he as a result of human;
Sindi stepsister Anastasia (Tress MacNeille) meets and falls town baker (Paulsen). However, as her mother - aka Cindy in the impious stepmother (Susanne Blakeslee) - believes breadboy under its stations, so it prohibits relations. Eventually Anastasia - with a little prompts from Cinderella - following her heart and hooks up with Mr. Yeastie.
Notification topic in the three tales? The dream is all about being true to yourself and doing what you like best. In fact, the vast majority are not Disney stations along the same lines? Nothing here seems new, but because very few Disney flicks offer fresh, lively stories, I can not really criticize Dreams for following the same trend.
Nevertheless, I can knock him for the cheap, uninspired piece of work. Regurgitated plots fine, as long as the film, or with them, but the dream is just a piece of product. There is nothing memorable. The voice acting is serviceable at best, and the animation looked atrocious. At the product itself to reproduce the original film fairly well, but Walt would spin in his grave if he saw rigid movement on display here. Much of Dreams barely rises above the Saturday morning TV caliber work, it is inconvenient piece of work.
I also did not care for the film, nods at the current position. I think Cinderella Continuation can remain true to the original tone or area without seeming out of date, but instead decided to make filmmakers things as more modern. Of course, they have not gone nuts in this regard, but the moments I saw was disconcerting. Of Gus “finger down the throat gesture to express abhorrence of annoying pop update” Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo “, the acknowledgements in the 21 st century is not much more than remind me of how this film was weak.
I felt unimpressed with most of the Disney direct-to-video effects, but Cinderella II: Dreams Come True is nadir of the form so far. The film completely, not to recapture the charm of the original, and it seems almost absurd bland and generic. Apply that some of the crummiest animation ever to emerge from Disney, and you have a nightmare come true.
One casting oddity: Barnes played Prince Eric in The Little Mermaid. However, he was the only actor unexplained absence during the Return to the Sea. I understood why Jason Marin do not flounder in both flicks, a role for the child, and he clearly would have been too old for that after 12 years. If Barnes just Disney balked at all, I understand his absence at sea, but because he is here seems very confusing.
