The Celestine Prophecy
The Catholic Church has not made too well in American films this year was the first murderous monk Da Vinci Code, and then pedophile priest Deliver Us From Evil, and now director of the machinations of Cardinal Armand Mastroianni ’s The Pope Celestine Prophecy. Fortunately for followers of the Catholic faith, The Pope Celestine Prophecy is about as much to do with legitimate theology, as cheerful stalk makes avian biology. The film is adapted from James Redfield in a huge (and inexplicably) successful novel, a combination of cornball conspiracy thriller and spiritual leadership that is not particularly bright nor inspiring. In Mastroianni, Redfield found a director capable of faithfully translate their ideas on the screen-good news for fans of the books and the bad news for all those who have even the remotest interest in engaging their brains while watching this turkey.
In Pope Celestine Prophecy tells the story of John Woodson, a teacher who loses his job and, through a series of coincidences that make Forrest Gump look like a neorealist masterpiece, completed in the spiritual quest in the Peruvian rain forest. There, Woodson reveals the existence of Pope Celestine Prophecy In, a collection of ancient scrolls that contain characters that incorrectly referred to as “ideas”-is so vague that the viewer can read all he or she wants them (one possible explanation for the popularity of book). The Catholic agency is a terrible threat, and the corrupt Cardinal (Hector Elizondo to the low point in his career, and, yes, I saw as High) is trying to stop the scrolls are getting from all over the world.
As a result, there are a number of scenes alternating sequence of actions in which anti-fulfilling prophecy forces are trying to crush the scrolls impact, awkward dialogue and exchanges, which in Woodson familiar instruct him in “miracles” in the scrolls. The film is really strange tone that it is a bit difficult to describe: Cast all deliver their lines in a somewhat overstated, as they are informative. It is as if they sell a product that they do not fully believe in a sense, perhaps they-product mushy is a hodgepodge of ideas through books and Redfield scenario. Given the weak content here, it may be unfair to blame the actors for prospective stoned more than enlightened.
Mastroianni is with them dozens of Hollywood films and TV shows to his credit (including one of this critic personal favorites, in the seminal slasher flick He Knows You Alone), and he gives Pope Celestine Prophecy In a slick look and rapidly. The rapid pace is crucial, as it keeps the film from becoming too dull, even when Redfield ideas are at their silliest. Nevertheless, the surface quality of Redfield’s “understanding” is blatantly obvious on the screen-that he was able to make some convincing as literature becomes simply goofy when they form a more specific medium of cinema. Mastroianni approaches this material with absolutely sincere and serious tone, which, of course, makes it all the more riotous when it deteriorates into kitsch.
There are probably two audience for movies like this. The first is devoted to lovers of books, which should not be too much if the bestseller lists of a few years ago, should be believed, despite the complete lack of interest in the film in theatrical release indicates that the masses have moved on to other trends half-baked theory of a new spiritual age. The second contains the Pope Celestine Prophecy people looking for unintentional laughs, as mentioned above kitsch factor is joyously throughout most of the picture. Apart from the wooden dialogue in the film, visual representations of the spiritual awakening are incredibly goofy-in movie “favorite periodic special effect is a pulsating, glowing spiritual light that only slightly more convincing than the complex, which Mork from Ork communicate with their elders. Eto shows a big problem in the movie: the rift between intensely sincere dialogue and bland action and images. Heroes continually make allegations that are simply not supported drama, and when Woodson walks among ordinary bunch of promising plant and said: “This place is so alive “It is almost as funny as anything Borat.
