Children of Men
Children of Men, Alfonso Cuar n adaptation of the PD James novel, takes a look at the apocalyptic England in the near future when the rules of law and order collapsed and the country is ruled by a fascist dictator. The film is set in 2027 - only 21 years old and in the future - but there is a simple explanation of how the world has received from which it is today as it was in the movie: mankind became sterile. Starting around 2009, women were unable to have children. Now, the species is aging and dying. In less than 100 years, there would be no human footprints left on the planet. Children of Men who are not interested in the anatomical reasons for the situation, but also in studying the social consequences of it. The film could be classified as science fiction, but its real interest in examining how different people react to the impending end of everything, and how one ray of hope is becoming a tool that is used to power-grab.
Although the premises, the character names, and some of these plot points remain the same in the movie “Children of Men radically different from the novel on which it was based. This scenario has undergone some changes, and each one takes it further from the source material. This is not necessarily bad. PD James is one of today’s elite mystery writers; Children Men, which goes beyond the usual genre, may be its weakest book. It contains evocative passages and some interesting and powerful messages, but it often reads too much, as erudite potboiler. In developing the story for the screen, Cuar n have changed things around to make it more in movies.
Faron Theo (Clive Owen) is in the center of the vortex that is about to break out between government forces and poorly organized group of insurgents. He hired on an ex-lover, Julian (Julianne Moore), with whom he split 20 years ago, after the death of his child. Theo is a broken-down loser, but his perspective on life changes when he meets Qi (Claire-Hope Ashitey), a pregnant young woman. Julian goal is to hide Kee until it can be spirited from England to a safe place in a mysterious group called “Human Project.” (Agurably at the silliest and most contrived conceit in the movie.) Other ideas, viewing Kee child as an essential tool for the creation of power (the rebels), or the maintenance of its (government). Julian in the idealism has no place in their worldview. Ultimately, the responsibility for the safety of the Teo Kee, and he is persistent and dangerous opponent in Luke (Chiwetel Ejiofore), the rebel leader. His lone allies are midwife, Miriam (Pam Ferris), and aging hippie (Michael Caine).
Some children will see men as allegory, but I see it more as a cautionary tale. Points made about assisted suicide and the risk of migration control, but they are tangential to the main story. The strength of the Cuar n vision is the way he is a rebel, as equally as greedy and immoral as government. They may be fighting a totalitarian regime, but they in no way portrayed as the “good guys”. Their aim appears to be less freedom for the masses than the power for themselves. There, in an ethical quagmire here that Cuar n forces many of the characters to navigate.
The tone of grim film - perhaps even bleaker than in the book. (The novel contains a love story to alleviate what is missing from the film.) 2027 England is a depressing place down. The man, in his last years, it shows that the return to form of animals, as anarchy spreads. How much is already up to the concept of the Government would not make sense? How much has to basic services such as electricity and running water, will not be possible? Children of Men, gives us some idea of a possible early dissolution. This is a unique view of the end of the world - one that is not through war, famine or disease, but also from the inability to reproduce the human race. (Note: Cuar n at, like James, is not to blame for infertility. scientifically inexplicable This is - an act of God or fate.)
In the video, at Emmanuel Lubezki, wonderful: a long, unbroken shots and images that make London look, as it did in the years after the Second World War. It’s about the fight against MTV, with edits used sparingly. There is a wonderful place in the car, which takes about five minutes, without a cut, and this is one of the few with the same length. In a desaturated color palette, as a result of grays benefit over other shades. This is a bleak future and have Cuar n intends to emphasize that. Children of Men is uncompromising in the way he paints a world that none of us would like to live
A deliberately low-key cast has been chosen - more participants gathered for their ability to live than the characters as attractive at the marquee. Clive Owen, who can be chameleon, as a picture of Theo shortcomings reluctance hero. Part of it is looking for solace from two decades ago death of his toddler son, and he finds it in becoming Kee in the limiter. (This makes more sense in the book, in which Theo was inadvertently responsible for the death of a child. in the film, the cause was influenza.) Michael Caine and Julianne Moore did not have big roles, but they add energy to the proceedings. (Theo is not the most lively of the warring parties.) Chiwetel Ejiofore In underrated plays in contradiction rebel leader. Peter Mullan is the place-stealing performance as the unbalanced military personnel. And Claire-Hope Ashitey, in her first major role, exhibits strength and determination - two qualities needed from the mother of a new human race.
Often, in films that are adapted from books, it is easy to assess whether the cinematic version superior or inferior to the written character. In the case of children, men, material differences are so great that such a simple definition can not be made. Cuar n interpretation of the inspired more than based on the novel by James, takes on its own life. Stripped birth, it is mostly chase film (with Theo spending more than half the film with Kee, keeping it from the hands of one group or another), but in an environment of communication and make it a thematic basis convincing. Although I reject the label allegory in this case “,” Children of Men is something to say about the human condition. Although imperfect, the deal, thought-provoking stuff.
