Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

If there are any living director who can do justice in the warped nature of Roald Dahl “children’s stories” that Tim Burton. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is not the first time the two have “collaborated”. Burton production of Henry Selick animated James and the Giant Peach, but this time he is armchair director, with his beloved stars in a cross to the camera. Though this film is adapted from one of the best loved stories Dahl, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory feels Burton through and through - from the bits and pieces cut from Edward Scissorhands at the end of that hearkens back to the topic of the father / son love with the Big Fish.

Allow me to abandon immediately obvious comparison: this version is more loyal and substantial than Mel Stuart foppish in the 1971 production, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory. Somehow - probably because many of my generation saw this year - after-year on television, while our young people - that overrated film became a classic. Dahl voznenavidel it, and it is no wonder why: the edgy became a genial, Willy Wonky was transformed into a father figure, and the Oompa Loompas lame sang songs (well, because one or two of these tunes are catchy). In this movie, Burton side shoulders Stewart movie, and returns to the source material. The result is faithful to Dahl family earned certificates.

In all gang hereAs film opens, we learn that Willy Wonka (Johnny Depp), a candy-maker famous recluse, golden tickets hidden inside five million wrappers Wonka candy bars sold worldwide. Those lucky enough to find them will be considered on a tour of the Wonka candy facility - the largest chocolate factory in the world. Gradually, winner identified. First, August Gloop (Philip Wiegratz), in a pig boy who believes chocolate will be its main food groups. Secondly, Veruca Salt (Julia Winter), the most spoiled girl in England. Her father pantywaist (Edward Fox) denies it did. Winner # 3, Violet Beauregarde (Annasophia Robb), an overachiever who turns mundane activities, contests, it should win. Fourth Mike Teavee (Jordon Fry), super-smart gambling addicts who believe that the world revolves around television and electronics. Finally, the winner of # 5, the bucket Londoner Charlie (Freddie Highmore), a poor boy who uses his last money to buy the winning candy bar. Accompanied by his grandfather, Joe (David Kelly), he arrives at the Wonka factory at the appointed hour, ready to begin the tour.

The inside of Willy Wonka factory is like a warped version of Disneyworld crossed with Oz. There are chocolate waterfalls and flying glass elevators. All work done in pint size Oompa Loompas (all played by Deep Roy, which reproduce through CGI), which never sing anything about “dippity-doo.” Nevertheless, they… sing and dance. Their numbers vary from breed to the Bollywood using Danny Elfman music and lyrics from the book Daly. Whether you want them or hate them (and I belong to the first category), the songs are not long, so this is the place Charlie and the Chocolate Factory in the category of a fractured fairy tale, not the music. Nevertheless, there is a lot of satire, and it is in these songs - most of which will go over the heads of children in the audience.

The movie, the message is a positive - overindulgence and selfishness are bad things - but he conveyed in a rather shocking manner as, one-on-one, Charlie’s comrades suffer a cruel fate. All’s well that in the end good, I think, but there is a time when it looks like Violet will be Tim Burton, in response to Monty Python in the notorious Mr. Creosote. (It is not, of course, because this is a PG-rated film.) Charlie and the Chocolate Factory is a family movie, but this roadside. It is darker than Willy Wonka and gaudy set decoration and special effects light-years ahead of what they were 34 years ago.

My, Mr. Wonka, big eyes that you have! Johnny Depp in a creepy image Wonka. This is the kind of person no one feel safe leaving the child alone with. Every once in a while, he says something unexpected. For example, consider introducing it to the camera in his factory: “Everything in this room is edible. Even I am edible. But that is called cannibalism, and it is with disapproval in most societies.” Lee Depp in Wonka remember Michael Jackson? No doubt, and some of the mannerisms are so similar that it is impossible to believe that this is coincidence. Depp and Burton have said that the picture is based on Howard Hughes and Edward Scissorhands, and it’s not difficult to understand those factors as well. In fact, Burton pays tribute to right on his previous film in the scene in which Wonka shown hefting a pair of large scissors to cut a ribbon.

The young Freddie Highmore acquits himself admirably as Charlie, and the fact that he performs here may help dispel the memory of Peter Ostrum in the hideous acting in the same role more than three decades ago. This is the second consecutive outing Highmore opposite Depp - two, as in Finding Neverland. In supporting cast is filled with beauty. Helena Bonham Carter (Burton, currently off-screen leading lady), and Noah Taylor play Charlie parents. I veteran Irish character actor David Kelly is a grandfather Joe. Kelly has had a long and productive career, with the recent international screen roles in films like Waking Ned Devine and the Matchmaker, but he may be best-known as the bad Mr. O’Reilly of John Cleese in Fawlty Towers.

In a mixture of Gothic and jaunty Charlie and the Chocolate makes factory sometimes topsy-turvy experience. From the point of view of how it works, it is not unlike Little Shop of horrors, the musical comedy about murder, mayhem and a giant Venus Fly Trap. There, the dark side of that film is interesting, as well. (Both films feature shots from inside the mouth, as a dentist holds procedure.) by adding a subplot about Willy and his father, Burton allows its lead character, history and even emotional component. , It is difficult to say that fans of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory will make this film - many of the key elements are the same, but the “feel” is totally different. Dahl lovers in the book, however, will almost certainly appreciate the fact that Burton is casting.
