Casablanca

Probably no stretch to say that Casablanca is perhaps the most loved American movies, it was written more words than any other picture. In the years since 1943 - release, the legends and rumors related to the filing of the film caused almost as much attention as the finished product. Some of the most famous and most often repeated anecdotes include producer Hal B. Wallis “almost casting Ronald Reagan and Ann Sheridan, as Rick and Ilsa, the existence of two scenarios for the last day of shooting (one option is finished, as filmed, and the other, unproduced version stored Rick and Ilsa together), and reported scenes of tension between some of the major players individuals.

Ultimately, however, while fascinating to study and analyse everything that goes in making Casablanca, the greatest pleasure everyone can learn from this film takes place through just watching him. In addition to some basic knowledge about recent world history, little background is necessary to evaluate the force and power of the film. Casablanca serves that only truly great film can be: enveloping the viewer in history, creating inextricable link with the characters, and just letting go with the end credits.

Unlike many films, which later became classics, Casablanca was popular at the time, although the staff at Warner Brothers officials were convinced that it would be a box-office failure. The film received 8 nominations Award “Oscar”, which resulted in three Oscars (best screenplay, best director and best image). The painting went to have long, healthy life in the re-releases, television, and (eventually) video. It contains many recognizable lines ( “Here’s looking at you, kid”, “Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine”, “Round usual suspects activity”, “Louis, I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship , “” We have always Paris, “” Problems three little people do not make mountains of beans in this mad world “). Ironically, however, the most famous bit of dialogue with Casablanca, “Play again, Sam” is not even in the movie. As Captain Kirk in “Beam me, Scotty,” that is apocryphal line. The closest the film gets a “Play it,” or “Play” As Time goes By “.

The first time I saw Casablanca, I remember noticing how “modern” appears. While many films iz’30 s i’40 s, as if seen from the terrible today, in Casablanca serves well marked. Topics importance of sacrifice, heroism, and still ring true. The dialogue has lost none of its mind or intellect. Atmosphere (extended to sterling black-and-white cinematography), which invades gloom is palpable than ever. And the characters are still as well-acted and three-dimensional, as they were more than fifty years ago.

Almost everyone knows the story, to be held in about a year after the Germans invaded France. Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman), and her husband, the Czech freedom fighter Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), wander in Rick in a cafe in Casablanca. Both are for the period from the Nazis and came to American property nightspot to lie low. But the German-controlled local authorities, led by Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains), on the fly, and Laszlo must act quickly to get a letter of transit he came, and then escape. There is Ilsa aware that the cafe is in the hands of Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), the one true love of his life. When the two see each other, sparks fly, and the enchanted memories of the time in Paris come flooding back.

Bogart and Bergman. When someone says in Casablanca, the two names that come to mind. In both actors are so perfectly cast, and to create such a tangible level of romantic tension that it is impossible to imagine anyone in their parts (and themselves to consider that they might not be the first choice of producers). Bogart at his best here, as hard cynic who hides under the broken heart fragmented layer of sarcasm. Ilsa in Casablanca arrived rips open cracks in the shield in Rick, revealing a complex personality, which requires a full range of Bogart action. As Ilsa, Bergman lights up the screen. What people in the audience will not renounce all that away from her?

Less known is Paul Henreid, romantic lead, which was a credit to Warner Brothers for the project. Most viewers know Henreid as “the other guy” in a romantic triangle, and although its effectiveness is not at the same level as his more famous co-stars, Henreid nevertheless doing the work themselves. Casablanca features some other famous faces. Conrad Veidt plays a Nazi commander on the trail of Laszlo, Peter Lorre, is the man who steals the letters of transit, and Sidney Greenstreet is a city of black market overlord. But the best performance in the film belongs to Claude Rains, which is excellent. Bogart and Bergman great, but better rains. This is the top role in an impressive career, and it is a shame that the actor did not win the Oscar Best support, to which he was appointed deserved. Rain is a standout in almost each of his place, but, like the high professional, he is constantly giving way to the attention of lighted star.

Another curious thing about Casablanca is that hardly anyone ever talks about the director. It is not as if Michael Curtiz was a journeyman who are lucky break here. S’20 s k’50 s, Curtiz was one of the hardest working directors in Hollywood, helming more than 100 movies, including White Christmas, Mildred Pierce, and Yankee Doodle Dandy. (Before that, he made nearly 50 films in Europe, where he began his career in 1912.) Curtiz was well-respected director, and his work on Casablanca was the first course, but, for some reason, small moviemakers, not associate his name this picture.

This is not a lot of stretch to say that Hollywood does not make movies like this more, because bittersweet ending went way from the black-and-white film. While in Casablanca was taken in today’s climate, Rick and Ilsa will flee to the air after avoiding the hail of fire (Rick is likely to be doing two-fisted gun that John Woo likes). There will not be a beautiful friendship between Rick and Louis. Who knows what would have happened to Victor Laszlo, but he will not be getting the girl. One of the things that makes Casablanca unique is the fact that it remains true to itself, not to the general image of a crowd-pleasing tactics. And because it is not despite the Casablanca has become known as one of the greatest films of all time. Maybe the modern generation scenarios should consider this before they are binding on the tactics of “happily ever after” ending.

From time to time, someone tries last film, but even the best re-tread was less than a pale shadow of the original. The most recent attempt was a serious Havana, Sydney Pollack inappropriate in the ignition (by the way, the word “serious” excludes Barb Wire). Despite the good cast (Robert Redford, Lena Olin, Raul Julia), as well as changes in place, this is clearly an updated Casablanca, and in Casablanca, not in Casablanca without Bogart and Bergman. Thus, while only about everyone associated with this legendary paintings left this life, the film itself has withstood the test of more than half a century to grow, as the cream on the top. One can only imagine that even in fifty years, his position in the hierarchy of the great all time will be even higher.
