Carlitos Way - Rise to Power
Probably best if one approaches Carlito’s Way: The growing power as a single movie rather than as Brian DePalma prequel to the 1993 adaptation of Edwin Torres’ famous novel crime. This is not to say a bad movie - it is actually surprisingly good , especially when you consider it directly on the status of the video - but it also does not deny that director Michael Bregman do not have even part DePalma ability (that is, although the two worked together in the past, it becomes clear that in the wildly DePalma creative sense of style, not to rub out Bregman).
The story begins with Carlito Brigante ’s (Jay Hernandez) The release from prison shortly after his 21st birthday, after which his efforts to create a drug delivery business with two prison buddies (Mario Van Peebles and Michael Kelly). Carlito and his new partners are facing a lot of opposition from different sources - including spots criminal named Hollywood Nicky (Sean Combs), and a pair of corrupt cops (Giancarlo Esposito and Tony Cucci). Meanwhile, Carlito holds us from the street smart coat-check girl (Jaclyn DeSantis) - despite opposition from the grave of her brother.
Carlito’s Way: The increase in power plays as a cross between PET and Goodfellas, as the film follows Carlito and his crew attempt to bring some of the cocaine to New York in poor areas - at the same time avoiding some sinister crime figures. While this is a kind of story we have seen many, many times in the past, Bregman (who also wrote the movie script) effectively holds viewer interest in the proceedings with various publics intriguing, quirky supporting characters.
In this connection, Combs is the real surprise here - as a rapper, who became an actor steps in the shoes of the charismatic killer with apparent ease. With appearances in films like Made and Monster’s Ball, Combs slowly creating itself as a truly talented performer, not just a singer looking for something to do in the off-season (such as Madonna). Hernandez, on the other hand, did not fare as well - imbuing Carlito with a kind of bland vibe that just about the polar opposite of what we have done with Pacino character (in all fairness, most of the subjects will be difficult-pressed to successfully follow as someone as magnetic Pacino). As a result, Carlito never becomes a figure that we have to fully take root (at least not to such an extent that we were DePalma version).
But hands down, then Luis Guzman in the place-stealing appearance as a cocaine-sniffing hitman pair, which ultimately will be the most entertaining aspect of Carlito’s Way: The growing power. The film is terribly talky second act - focuses on Carlito in connection with unstable brother Van Peebles’ character - and, as a result, Guzman injects the film with the arrival of much-needed boost of energy. And while his performance, of course, is best about the movie, it comes as something of relief to find that Carlito’s Way: The growing power really is a legitimate piece of work (and not just sleazy attempt to milk the popularity of the original).
