Brother
Few filmmakers have epitomized cool movie as “Beat” Takeshi Kitano. The well-known comedian and game show host in his native Japan, the actor / writer / director is also an art-house icon in the Americas and Europe, with the leadership and starred in a series of stylish crime films. Chock-full minimalist drama and excessive shooting, Kitano early in the film brutal and Chop Sonatina movie was drooling fans, while his later work Fireworks elegant many-a-critic’s eye.
Kitano in the new movie Brat cut from the same cloth - for the first half, anyway. Again, Kitano, looks like a cross between John Garfield, and the Buddha, plays shorter battery, whose gentle demeanor violated sudden violence. This time he was not ruthless yakuza lieutenant Yamamoto, who fled to America after the war, gang kills his clan. Then he searches for his half-brother Ken (Claude Maki), which has actively participated in the group with low drug nominally led by Denny (Omar Epps), and the team was not sure what to do in this quiet shuffling gait with compatriots.
Despite possessing only a small smattering of English and weapons, Yamamoto - or “Aniki” (brother) as his cohorts start calling him - Ken transformed into rag-tag band of ruthless crime syndicate. And so, when the brother starts to go wrong, moving from whimsical combination of culture-clash comedy / crime thriller in just another scar-like shoot-’em work. Faster than you can say: “In the world of mine,” Yamamoto crime empire begins to decline because of the ill-advised war with the Mafia. Yamamoto, however, seemed more in silly romance than his gang, and soon his empire in retreat on all fronts.
Like Chow Yun-Fat vehicle at the replacement killers or Jet Li-starrer Romeo must die, brother has established a Central icon, but contains only a few of the elements that made him a star. There are many scenes in the Brat, that the classic Kitano - his first run with Danny ends in the eye with a bottle, and the game is played Russian roulette with the captured mafiosi is amusing. However, after mechanical plot takes over, that almost everyone can play Yamamoto. Hell, Ninja - film veteran Sho Kosugi We could do this job. final irony is that Kitano does not place blame on the Hollywood producers of tainting his vision - he penned the script himself.
