Bread and Roses

Through Atlantic, British director Ken Loach has devoted his career in the code of honor recognizes that the basic dignity of the human being, regardless of income and social status. Loach is an activist, and every film he made illustrates one aspect or another of his world view. Bread and roses, his subsequent My Name Is Joe (and his third feature of the script Paul Laverty), brings him for the first time in the United States. Set in Los Angeles in immigrant communities, Loach examines inequalities facing minorities, who are forced to survive on poverty-level wages because they lack the skills and organization of trade unions. He personalizes the struggle, focusing on a small group of characters who work as janitors union is not in the center of the high rise.

The film begins with the arrival of Maya (Pilar Padilla newcomer), in Los Angeles. Her sister Rosa (Elpidia Carrillo), paid for her to be brought across the border with Mexico. When Rosa unable to come up with an agreed price, Maya is not required to compensate for the difference in her body. She escapes, and the Rosa leaving home and sisters are joyous reunion. Money is a problem for Rosa, a husband who is a doctor bills a large part of the work proceeds, it allows you to work long hours in the janitor. Maya also needs work, and it helps Rosa to find a job with her company. Meanwhile, a local activist, Sam (Adrien Brody), is trying to union workers in the building where the Maya and Rosa work - intent, which creates friction between the sisters. Maya believes that the case is to fight for. Rosa, who can not afford to lose their jobs, are unwilling to take any risks.

Loach in the pro-union stance becomes loud and clear. In fact, there are times when the film is close to the edges of sermonizing. But, as is always true of the director’s films, we have become so involved in the lives and relationships of the characters, that the submission of reports and seems a natural extension of the story, not the grafted heavy affairs at the site. Loach approaches cinema with almost Dogme-like simplicity (the method he used before and von Trier. Al. Kodifitsirovany style), using hand-held cameras, preferring simple shots, and refraining movie spoof. It makes the characters and their situation appears to be more realistic and less as a writer inventions.

One scene in the bread and roses stands out above all others. This is a searing confrontation between Maya and Rosa, which generates goosebumps even as it raises the film to the next level. The sets should be experienced in its power to be understood, but everything else places in the movie, in another context, and introduces moral ambiguities that prohibits pure idealism. Both actresses participated (Carrillo and Padilla) are incredible, not as Lara Belmont disrupt war zone has not yet been more emotionally wrenching moment determined to celluloid.

Several name actors leant Loach in support of this film, making cameo appearances. They include Lara Belmont and Tim Roth (both of whom were on the publicity tour in Los Angeles for the War Zone Loach, when the survey), as well as William Atherton (as sleazy reporter in the first two Die Hard movies), and Ron Perlman . Their presence increases the credibility of the movie, but the work of the leads that gives bread and roses its strength. The film is not without drawbacks - it tended to lionize pro-union movement without the recognition of certain terrorist tactics - but this does not detract from its overall impact, and does not in any way affect the important message that supports Loach.
