The Border

Border was inspired by the series’ Los Angeles Times’ article on illegal immigrants from Mexico. These poverty-stricken, hopeless and helpless Mexicans long for a new life in America. But, as in the film title songs Ry Cooder noted, the risk for these people is high: “You can lose more than you could ever find.”

Charlie (Jack Nicholson) is a member of the United States Border Patrol in Los Angeles, whose social climbing wife (Valerie Perrine) negotiate his transfer to El Paso, where her high school friend (Shannon Wilcox) lives in a duplex. They move in next door. Her husband Cat (Harvey Keitel), a border guard, introduces Charlie to the daily roundup of procedures in which “wetbacks” are processed and sent back to Mexico.

Script writers Deric Washburn (The Deer Hunter), Walon Green, and David Freeman spade corrupt cops, especially Cote and his friend (Warren Oats), which are linked to a ring that smuggles Mexicans in the country for the big businessmen and manage independent competitors. In scenarios, it is also clear to the “good life” they see illegal immigrants in America is nothing more than a miasma of unfulfilling materialism shows Charlie wife and her new friends.

Fed with his marriage and enraged the amorality of the border guards, Charlie tries to save his life by helping Maria (Elphidia Carrillo), a young Mexican mother of his child, and younger brother, who were made homeless by the earthquake, which destroyed her village. After several attempts to get her across the border could not be, he becomes obsessed with finding her child - a boy was stolen, and is about to be sold to wealthy, childless American couple.

Jack Nicholson in vivid and earnest manner Charlie Border holds together. His dream regard to morality and beatings in the smuggling ring rightly sees “craziness” in Charlie’s face. Despite the fact that the saga of Mary unfulfilled aspiration to freedom, emotionally affecting, the thirst for truth lay inside, which make the Border success.
