Bordertown
Bordertown is a fictional film based on real events that have occurred in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico, according to which, within a few years, tens (if not hundreds) of Mexican women have been abducted, raped and murdered, and little, if anything, it is done on it. Many of these women are working in malquiladora, an assembly line factory, where work in the conditions for a long time and little pay. Most of these malquiladoras owned by American companies, using the freedoms provided in the NAFTA trade agreement, in which they can pay workers only 5 to $ Dollars a day and provide no benefits. In saving corporations billions in expenses scandal that would draw attention to the exploitation going on in these factories is not something they want to shed light on. Subsequently, the Government, whose policies in the pocket of corporations that own these malquiladores, turns blind eye to the problem, news buried, and women began meeting ducks for criminals who seemingly can do whatever they like without penalty.
Jennifer Lopez (Monster-in-Law, shall we dance) plays Lauren Adrian, upgrade, and the next Chicago newspaper reporter, “which is a big dream of becoming one of the major foreign correspondents in which she is likely to get, as soon as it ends covering hot bucket in Juarez, Mexico. After the rash of killings that have taken place, mainly borne by the local authorities, has been living in the form of 16 - year-old factory worker named Eva (Zapata, Santos Peregrinos), which had been left to die in two men who raped her. Using local newspaper man named Diaz (Banderas, take the lead), Lauren must get to the end of the story to the authorities, as well as the bad guys, find them in the first place. How she believes is a corrupt system distributed by unfair labour practices when workers offered absolutely no protection from the police, government agencies or companies for which they are slaves. Loren in part may blow lid wide open, but only if she and Eva live to talk about it.
Writer-director Gregory Nava (Why do Fools Fall in Love?, My family), which aim Lopez, in his 1997 breakthrough film, Selena. spins the story in terms of drawing attention to this serious problem, and he should be commended for at least trying to do what he can to give the women the right to vote. Unfortunately, as heart-wrenching as the reality, the film that he made is not enough to be honorable. Many of the problems resides in the Navy in the style of the director, who will never be able to settle into a certain groove, moving from the tense drama and sleazy thriller in a way that the work is in conflict with each other. It’s not a particularly attractive film either deliberately saturated colors, and some methods, such as jumps, fades, and the short-cuts. It’s difficult not to feel a distance in history because of the incessant camera techniques, more focused on the point of permanent distraction.
This is not all bad. Nava in writing is serviceable, and perhaps more visionary director, something more attractive can be done from this troubling history. While many viewers, and even some critics, enjoyed ridiculing J-Lo almost every effort, it recently, and while this film will do nothing to get its rapidly dissolving career in the right direction, it will not be because of her role in it - it gives a commendable performance in a role written with her in mind. The fine supporting role, are some good performers, such as Banderas, Shin (The Departed), and Braga (Empire). Lost in the shuffle, but with the second-largest role in the film, Maya Zapata able to hold it with veterinarians.
Nava choice in the movie, these developments as cliched thriller is not the best option, as it tends to weaken the grim reality of what happened in the form of entertainment. Of course, this is a story that must be told, but I think that keeping things on the real, it would be harrowing enough without having to constantly jewelry story for additional sensationalism. There, something must be said for taking the road when you have an important mission in mind, it undermines the credibility of the history when 85% of the events is pure fabrication based on speculation and politically dubious observations.
Fans should enjoy Lopez see her in the role that really shows that she really can act when it is not for signing soft glamour pieces, even if it seems too Hollywood to pieces. Nevertheless, I think that, even though the film will not be able to fulfil their potential, it acquits itself well (it also serves as a producer of the film). Although Nava film offers something to think about later, it is disappointing that only the fact that the film is based on a real tragedy that she even smidge of confidence. It’s difficult to slam a film that seeks to draw attention to certain rights issue, that there is no easy solution, because public ignorance, but with such overreaching theme and heavy-handed direction, the number of manipulations part in undermining almost all claims to authenticity. In women lost their lives deserve more than to be used as feed for mediocre B-movie thriller.
