Boat Trip
I slide Cuba Gooding Jr. career continues.
Immediately after winning the Oscar for his admittedly stellar work in Jerry Maguire, he was wasting his obvious talent, in issuing a lowbrow fare such as “Chill Factor, Snow Dogs and now VIBA. What could be the possible explanation for his appearance in the continuation of this silly flicks? Perhaps a young boy, he dreamed of roles in comedy stupid and dumb action movies - Oscar win and the whole case was just a bump in the road for him. Anyway, Gooding, Jr. is not coached any signs of rejection of this kind of movies guys like Carrot Top and Tom Arnold would be better suited for.
Exhibit casts Gooding Jr. as Jerry, a simple guy who is going to just rolled his long time girlfriend (Vivica A. Fox). His best buddy Nick (Horatio Sanz), makes him take a cruise is guaranteed to be filled with available women - but the circumstances are too confusing to be explained here, the two wind to cruise gay. By the time they realize what is happening, the vessel at the port on the left - leaving the couple were stuck on board in the week. But Jerry unwittingly finds himself falling in love with a beautiful dance instructor named Gabriella - which, of course, he finds a homosexual.
This is a great room that can be made to the original comedy Happy 1980s proportions, but co-writer/director Mort Nathan blows it right from the word go. The most obvious mistake, he does so with Nick and Jerry realize that they are on gay cruise almost immediately (they were mostly board and find out a few minutes later). Many comedies We should proceed from their reaction as they roamed around the ship, one wonders where all the women were. But, they reveal the truth so quickly, the movie settles into predictability lot earlier than they should have. The romantic subplot between Jerry and Gabriella gets so much screentime, it is unlikely to even be considered subplot.
But in fact, most of VIBA is simply not funny. Although the film tries terribly hard to find out laughter, most of the jokes here in stupid and obvious variety. For example, there’s a gag works with Nick efforts to sleep with a beautiful Swedish model who found her way on board (do not ask) - except, he is constantly thwarted by her mannish coach (played by Lin Shaye, a Farrelly brothers regular). This is not exactly the scenario that could be high-class banter, but the potential for hilarity to be, of course, exist. However, rather than to try something different with this very familiar comedic bits, Nathan sticks with the tried and true, but the end result almost all the time with a sense of humor can be seen coming from a mile.
Regarding the actors, Gooding, Jr. and Sanz deliver everything on the highest performance can be expected from this film. Gooding Jr. do nothing here we have not seen it done many, many times in the past, while Sans clearly trying to be difficult to specify the nature of his barely written. The only standout is Roger Moore as confidently suave gay man who unsuccessfully pursuing Nike. Moore looks as if he has cheerfully spoofing his Bond image, as well as a movie with its only laughs (and they were laughing more than anything else, really).
2003, so far, have been rife with lousy comedies and VIBA is the last. Despite the seemingly absolute premise, the film never lived it, and only serves as another nail in Cuba Gooding Jr. as the only promising career.
