Bombs exploded, debris raining down on the streets as fireballs explode upwards. A police officer who makes a habit of playing the hero is preparing for his last mission, it is far more dangerous than anything in his past. A woman sitting in the driver’s seat of the vehicle speed, could not put her feet on the brakes, fearing an explosion, that action could result.

This may sound like the plot for Speed, but it’s a thumbnail sketch of some of the points Blown Away … , and that this problem. It is unfortunate that two movies with so much in common have been released within a month of each other. Unfortunate for Blown Away, that is. Because not only speed, the better the movie, but it was first issued, and no matter what the movie goes before the cameras earlier, Keanu Reeves’ picture will be viewed as the original in the film-will be public. Actually, after meeting through slides ride speed, Blown Away is a disappointment. It is a bit slow action picture standards, but compared to its predecessor, it is an absolute drag. Speed is a masterpiece of momentum and excitement, Blown Away is a talky cat-and-mouse affair occasionally interrupted bursts of pyrotechnics.

The film opens in Ireland, at Castle Gleigh prison, where lifer Ryan Gaerty (Tommy Lee Jones) has escaped with the help of home-made bombs. After the prison, he heads to America, where he saw the news on bold bomb defusion in Boston bomb detachment officer Jimmy Dove (Jeff Bridges). This, however, is not that Ryan used to know the name of that person. Meanwhile, Jimmy decided to retire from active service, to start a new life with his wife Kate (Suzy Amis) and stepdaughter. Ryan, however, no one will be so determined that the best way to avenge the Jimmy in the past “wrong” to turn the city into raging hell, resulting in “chaos” and “anarchy” in Boston, courtesy of his own unique skills.

Blown Away trying to be more than one explosion-laced thriller at the attempts by some characters depth and originality. It does not work. All exhibits on Jimmy and Ryan attended in the past so much window dressing, and, given the amount of time it takes, in the end, hamstringing action. Furthermore, it is unnecessary. A faceless villain adequately portrayed to be as effective as Ryan, and there are dozens of other, equally compelling, reasons, which might be submitted.

Jeff Bridges’ fine performance adds an additional layer of depth to his character, but the actor considerable skills is not enough. Similarly, while Tommy Lee Jones brings suave coolness to Ryan, the villain seems too limited for this type of film. In a sadistic fascination Alan Rickman or scenery-chomping Dennis Hopper in a much prefers Jones’ inner bitterness.

Blown Away is not a bad picture, in any other summer, it might be attractive Cassa attraction. In 1994, however, he comes in a distant second to Speed, as well as the presence of other film serves only to reinforce Blown Away faults. In trying to create additional complexity in the script and characters, this film managed only mangling her pace. There are moments of high tension, but also the time spent on the edge of his seat is likely to be outmatched at the time spent drumming fingers on the armrest, waiting for things to get moving.
