Blow
PET film is the third in the past six months before the fall of the audience hip-deep into the drug culture. I like “Requiem for dreams and motion, in function of Ted Demme managed to carve out a unique niche is that he never seems to be the imposition of often-trodden territory. This is an effective and powerful picture that follows the rising and falling of drugs dealer George Jung (Johnny Depp), as his history plays against all the changes unravel iz’60 s,’70s, i’80 s. Based on the true story (as related in a book by Bruce Porter and adapted for the screen, David McKenna and Nick Cassavetes), and using scoring texts PET shows how George insatiable desire for tangible property led him to deceive or be deceived by almost all he knows or likes.
The film begins with a brief segment, set in George’s childhood. His hard-working father, Ray (Ray Liotta), and materialistic mother (Rachel Griffiths), are forced to declare bankruptcy when they are unable to make ends meet. Ray George, offers some advice: “Money is not real. Does not matter, but it seems that yes.” This is a lesson George, not to take to heart; to kontsu’60 s, it is determined on its own, and not find themselves in dire financial situation that has paralysed his parents. So he of the heads to California with his best friend, Tuna (Ethan Suplee), in order to make his condition. There he meets the love of his life, Barbara (Franka Potente), and with the help of a friend Barbara, Derek (Paul Reubens) gets set up selling pot. Soon, “Boston George ‘is king of the beach, but he understands that the real money in transporting drugs on the east coast, where students will pay top dollar. So, using the services of Barbara, who is the stewardesses (and whose bags are not checked at airports), it provides for the creation of a network of networks, so that Derek and his $ 15000 a week - until he gets caught.
While in prison, George Colombian cellmate (Jordi Molla a) shows that it change its product from marijuana to cocaine. After being released from prison, George goes to Colombia, where he presented to the most powerful drug lord in South America, Pablo Escobar (Cliff Curtis). Escobar likes what he sees, and soon George and his new wife, Mirtha (Penelope Cruz), supplying approximately 85% of coke in the United States. But it is a risky business, especially if the dealer is also a user.
In fact, as he followed the arc of a man’s life and career through the years, recalls PET Boogie Nights, although the drug industry here, and not pornography. It is also not a message movie - this is not the indication of the drug to whom, except George and his family. PET wants us to see George as sympathetic, or at least human, rice, and not demonized drug lord. Consequently, Demme carefully and do not show any of the “victims” George business. Such an approach would be unbalanced film carefully rhythm.
Ultimately, the film is not so much about drugs, as in the dynamics of generations - fathers and children. Two relations, which form the basis of PET are those emotional, and his father, George, and George, and his daughter. The tragedy of the film is that, one way or another, George managed to hoodwink the two people he loves most. His failure in this relationship is that it intended to reduce its shadow on the man he once. In depicting George relations with the father and daughter, PET is doing an excellent job with the economy scene.
PET did not do an autopsy in the spread of drugs, but it gives us some intriguing glimpses (including the opening credits, when it shows the time and cocaine in the package). However, as in the movie is not about the end-user victims, not on the process, either. PET is about George - the choices he makes, the means by which it reaches the top, and the distance he must immerse reach bottom.
For Johnny Depp, it is an opportunity to broaden his - he has the opportunity to do brilliantly. Playing George calls it, as everything from fresh surfacing as a twenty-something full of hope and vigor of the fifty-year old man, who was broken lives. Depp did not miss a beat. We see George all sides: arrogance, anger, fear, insecurity, and repentance. In supporting cast is solid. Ray Liotta, is still the best known to date as the lead in Martin Scorsese in Goodfellas (which parallels can be drawn to George), George supports the picture of a father. For Liotta, it is a chance to essay a character who quietly and without malevolence. Rachel Griffiths and Penelope Cruz play different types shrew - or both likable and damage George. Jordi Molla and that George Colombia “brother”, and Paul Reubens, who looks more like Alan Cumming as Pee-Wee Herman, is very effective as sexually ambivalent Derek. Finally, the German actress Franka Potente (who starred in the title character in Run Lola Run, and as a princess in the upcoming Princess and the Warrior, as directed by Tom Tykwer) sheds its focus, but not her charisma, playing Barbara.
For many years, Ted Demme has labored in the shadow of his uncle, Jonathan. What impact, the “other” Demme finally made an appearance, that the film should earn him and more than its name. The film has all the right elements in the almost impeccable proportions - a well-written script, good acting Transverse, and the perfect pace. At two hours long, attacked as neither bloated nor meat. And that is released before the Oscar season from October to December, the film boasts a level of intelligence rarely go fine craftsmanship.
