Bloody Sunday

Three times over the past two centuries, the days were referred to as “Bloody Sunday”. First, on November 13, 1887, took place in London, where police violently disrupted a meeting of socialists in Trafalgar Square. Second, on January 22, 1905 in St. Petersburg, Russia, occurred when a group of peaceful demonstrators were killed (causing the Russian Revolution of 1905). And thirdly, on January 30, 1972 in the Northern Ireland city of Londonderry, as a result of 13 dead and 14 wounded, when British soldiers fired on Civil Rights March. The events that third Bloody Sunday “mark on the territory explored Paul Greengrass’ picture.

This shows that every story has two sides, and the 1972 “Bloody Sunday” is no exception. Both sides - the citizens of Derry and the British army - have different views about what happened that afternoon. According to the latter, the military did not start shooting, but returned fire after IRA members began firing at them. According to the former, the British attack without provocation, and as a result have been innocent victims caught in the line of fire. Official investigation and were unable to provide a clear path of guilt, and although little evidence weighs in favor of the version offered by the residents of Derry, there is no way to make a clear definition of what is “true.

In Bloody Sunday, Greengrass chose to tell the story through citizen version of events. Addition of his personal belief that happened, it is considerably more convincing interpretation. Greengrass’ approach attempts a balance - it is based on confrontation, presenting the view from both sides. In addition to spending time with key individuals involved in the Civil Rights March, it introduces the audience to a number of British officers, including one conflict, sympathetic man, Brigadier Maclellan (Nicholas Farrell), who unsuccessfully tries to rein in the excesses of his people.

Bloody Sunday took us through the day on January 30, 1972, which begins in the wee morning hours and the expansion until after sunset. The film focus is on a few characters. Ivan Cooper (James Nesbitt character actor whose riveting figures), the local member of Parliament, is the organizer of the Civil Rights March. As Martin Luther King, he believed that peaceful assembly is the route through which change can be affected. “We will peacefully March,” he said, “Do Unionist rule is put in place.” Another objective is to keep the IRA from March because violence begets violence. However, many of the young marchers, such as Gerry Donaghy (Declan Duddy), tend to rioting, requiring only a spark to set them off. The British are ready for the day activities - which are illegal under existing rules, which prohibit the march. Major General Ford (Tim Pigott-Smith) decided to take a hard-line, commanding Maclellan arrest of hundreds of “hooligans”. Troops deployed, ready to go to the state of affairs when to get out of control. And, although in March begins calmly enough, with between 5000 and 20000 citizens involved, it was not long before taking things go badly wrong. And, in the midst of the chaos, the group starts shooting too soldiers using live ammunition, and the result is massacre.

Greengrass chose to photograph Bloody Sunday, in a pseudo-documentary fashion, letting your eyes, you-are-there experience. Film is presented through the lens of the camera with a hand-held desaturated color that many scenes seem to be almost black and white. Style effectively do what he intended to do - draw the viewer into chaos, at the time, and provide thrills of a horror that occurred. The result is not a melodrama, but a kick-in-on-gut shock tactics. feeling of inevitable tragedy is the inevitable — almost every scene prior to the first defeat of the building, there is a sense look dry, brittle tinder being stacked activities, just waiting for the match to be abandoned. what every Bloody Sunday, when it is easy to forget that this is once again creating, rather than materials From this landmark event. This is especially true when the camera identifies James Nesbitt horrified, disbelieving face of the violence.

Bloody Sunday won the audience award at the 2002 Sundance Film Festival, which is a tribute to its impact on the viewers. Although Greengrass brings his own perspective on the events that day, this film, he avoids mistakes sermonizing, lionizing the dead, and the denigration of the British. The result is a bleak, surprising picture.
