Black Hawk Down
Saving Private Ryan in 1998 introduced a new era war films. Gone are bloodless fairy tale which depicted gallantry on the battlefield as a place where courage is the fruit of victory. Replacing their stories back to the gritty reality of the struggle - violence, bloody, terrible and chaotic. Images of severed arms, fountaining blood spilled and bowel replaced sterile, romanticized images of so many black-and-white war movies. For those not easily sickened by such visceral, film attacks films as “Black Hawk” Down can provide a powerful, lasting impact.
In the years after Vietnam, the armed forces of the United States keeps a low profile (to the extent to strong-arm superpower profile can be described as “low”), usually make their presence known (via TV news) in the “sure-fire” operations as hostage Grenada or capture Noriega. Most recently, on the overwhelming success of the campaign in Afghanistan, reaffirmed the American public faith in the armed forces. But there have been setbacks - and one of the most striking took place one day in October 1993. Only a few years after victory in the war in the Persian Gulf, the United States military machine was reminded that her presumed invulnerability is an example of self delusion.
In Black Hawk Down scenario written by Ken Nolan, based on the book of Mark Bowden. Bowden, the staff newspaper, the Philadelphia Inquirer, in the first detailed the disastrous 1993 raid in Mogadishu in serial numbers, 29 - part of the story, which appeared in the paper during November and December 1997. A year later, in the book, which took a series Inquirer and expand it, as in shops all over the world. final product has attracted the interest of two Hollywood marquee names - Products-producer Jerry Bruckheimer and producer / director Ridley Scott, who was in search of something to follow Hannibal and Gladiator. pair and two Black Hawk Down got to leave the land.
This is not an easy film to participate in, but it is what it sets out to do and brings the audience deep into the heart of battle. This is a noisy, messy, and repetitious. There are probably more bullets and explosions than in the recent picture. Nevertheless, the illusion of “be there” so realistic that, at some point, I unwittingly ducked my head to avoid it struck. Amazingly, Scott managed to convey the chaos of experience without losing in the narrative. There is a story told here - one based largely on the accounts of survivors - and it comes through clearly, not muddled. Some have argued that it is not enough, given the background, but I would counter that the introductory crawl enough to lay the groundwork. Black Hawk Down does not attempt to analyze what happened in Somalia - dramatize his concern is the 24 hours of hell, which killed 18 United States soldiers and wounding 70 others, while a Somalian activities racks body count that number in hundreds. Film for the suppression, not politics. This is the heroism and courage in the face of unspeakable brutality.
Black Hawk Down begins with a quote on Plato: “Only the dead have seen the end of war. Then, during a series of color-desaturated images, we presented a brief history of why the United States in Somalia in nachale’90 s. The story begins with the October 2, 1993. Characters are - Major General William Garrison (Sam Shepard), who has been in command of the United States military presence in the region; Sergeant Matt Eversmann (Josh Hartnett), recently appointed to the command of a group of companies Clerk John Grimes (Ewan McGregor), who is about exchange of documents for the gun, Lieutenant Colonel Danny McKnight (Tom Sizemore), responsible for a segment of the ground troops, as well as Master Sergeant Paul Howe (William Fichtner), who will challenge the orders, if he thinks they are not feasible. Together, these men, and many others, going to intervene in the seemingly routine mission, which will go catastrophically wrong.
The aim is to capture several key advisers Mohamed Farrah Aidid, the warlord who controls Mogadishu. The United States wants to Aidid ways, and this seems to be the best opportunity to advance that goal. No troops, both in the field and in the air, are facing stiffer resistance than expected, and this has led to downing of two black hawk helicopters. As ground forces then become divided during the raid turns into a rescue mission, and in particular, because of poor planning and in part because of bad luck, fire fight turns into fiasco.
Scott in the movie is a fast-growing and riveting. This film will keep the average viewer on the edge of his or her seat, with eyes fixed on the screen. Cinematographer Slawomir Idziak (best known as the officer often late, great Polish director Krzysztof Kieslowski) makes frequent, effective use of filters to ease and improve the tone of “grittiness” Black Hawk Down appearance. Hans Zimmer music as effective, although there are moments, when he drew attention to himself too much.
At all performances are effective because each party knows how to bring his side. Lead man Josh Hartnett as a much more comfortable in this role than he, as an overly romantic duelists in Pearl Harbor. Ewan McGregor, temporarily move into his lightsaber, manages quite convincing American accent as the film least likely to be a hero. But the real stars of “Black Hawk” Down with character actors and Tom Sizemore, William Fichtner, which pose a vivid personality with limited screen time. Sizemore is not alien war movies, having appeared in both Saving Private Ryan and Pearl Harbor. Fichtner is one of those guys whose name many people do not recognize, but whose face immediately strikes a chord acquaintances (the very definition of “character actor”) - he is perhaps best known for roles in communications and “Armageddon” and, as seemingly half of the cast, he was also in Pearl Harbor.
For Jerry Bruckheimer, who is the most easily and for his part in a big budget, high-testosterone, low-intelligence project, it is able to update his image. (For the first time, scientists have a mention of “Bruckheimer” and “Oscar” in the same sentence.) And for the moment, Ridley Scott is riding high on a wave of his career. Critical praise for “Black Hawk” Down are high, as they were for Gladiator - and rightly so. This is an extremely effective action picture. Of course, it could have more character, and there are times when the grief verges on being donated extreme (especially in the “operations” to clamp the artery), but they are minor quibbles. In general, “Black Hawk” Down is one hell of a ride. For better or for worse, it leaves you stunned and reeling.
