Beowulf & Grendel
In AB 500, on the outskirts of Daneland, a troll with murderous force dozen men who regularly attacks the Mid hall of King Hrothgar (Stellan Skarsgard), and kills his warriors account. For his assistance comes hero Beowulf (Gerard Butler), a legendary warrior who promises to “see Valhalla, or his head on a pike.” But determined avenger discovers that his battle is much more complex than simply “hero against monster” scenario most would like to believe so.
If you ever took English Lit course, the chances are you have been forced to endure reading at least a few stanzas of the epic poem of the sixth century, early and seminal work of literature in the language of the Anglo-Saxons. We are happy to report that this is one of those rare cases where the movie is better than the book. Although faithful to the source material in its major events, in order to increase the length feature story, writer Andrew Ray Berzins details of the background of the principals, specifying them as three-dimensional characters, but as a symbol of the figures and adds an additional layer of depth to the classic chronicle. “This is a question of assumptions about the violent resolutions” to the problem, Ansis disclosed in an interview on the disk.
Berzins’ take on the tale is obviously more respectful Post-Modernism, the exchange of supernatural elements of psychological depth, intelligently and how the events he portrays it really become inflated in the legend in the hands of skilled story-spinner. Although the film starts slowly, it grows in intellectual action epic, as compelling and scary as any modern horror story.
Is watching this film adequate substitute for reading the original? Most English teachers are likely to say “no”. But if we look past the recorded words to reason they were recorded, in the first place, and the reason why they have lasted millennium and a half years, we might intuit that even in the original version, it was less about the words than This was in respect of an excellent story telling that the audience is spellbound. Films our modern method of achieving the same goal, and the film-like Excaliber or Spartacus is a perfect example of how the classic fairy tales yore may extend their origin in the new age by translating them in a modern format. More fun, too.
