Battlefield Earth - A Saga of the Year 3000
On the occasion of fate helps film critic. This is a case where a small film like War Zone blows away an entire film festival audience. Or when something beautiful, like Croupier comes out of nowhere. On the first test, I attended a battlefield from Earth, there was another time, though not in the same similar. 30 minutes in the collapse of the motion picture, with thunder crashing into the sky above, the power to move, fortunately, freeing me from my direct responsibility, endure until the end of the film. Since I began writing reviews, I never went to film, but Battlefield Earth would have been an applicant, I was so inclined. In this regard, the fate of the local power grid and allows me to make an early exit without blemishing my record. I regret to the appeal of debt, I then returned to the crime scene to finish the job. In retrospect, I should stopped.
In the truncated review, I wrote after my failed initial screening, I pondered the possibility that the battlefield Earth, it might be better after the first quarter unpromising. I can now definitively say that it does not. Indeed, it becomes even worse. Much worse. The final 30 minutes are so chaotic, poorly edited, and poorly constructed that it is virtually impossible to understand what occurred, and, in those rare cases where the reader is able to determine a movie “code, history has no meaning. I recognize that Most summer films devoid of logic, but Battlefield Earth underwent lobotomy logic. holes filled When they did so laughably absurd contrivances. Either this segment five minutes, you can find at least one. (When the film goes on video, it can be a party game.) Battlefield Earth makes movies like supernova models and scope seem consistency. It takes real effort to make this film fragmented. And, worse, he bears full.
Much has already been said that the author of the novel Battlefield Earth, L. Ron Hubbard, is the founder of the Church of Scientology, but that seems to be a red herring. Scientology and Battlefield Earth have little in common. It is true that John Travolta, a devout Scientologist, is a driving force in getting this film made (it is produced, and stars in it), but it is by no means a tract or advertising for Scientology. Travolta is not a direct Battlefield Earth - that task falls to Roger Christian (I do not know if he Scientologist or not), whose work here has not improved the impression I formed of him when, through one of its previous capacity, Vdohnoviteley. Christian shows no hint of the skill here. He uses all kinds of camera tricks (including about a dozen napkins, which attempt to hide the lack of legitimate conversions), but none of them has a purpose. It is probably not the best representation of what I am, why he sometimes tilt the camera, or use slow motion. Maybe he thinks it looks cool.
I read Battlefield Earth 17 years ago, shortly after it first hit the market (it was published in 1982, some 40 years after Hubbard’s reputation as a writer was to consolidate). I do not remember much in the way of details, but, at the age of 15 or 16, I liked. This rapid pace of pulp and science fiction yarn with convincing characters. And, in 2-inch spine, it will keep even the fastest reader turning pages for a while. This engaging material, but not unprecedented, and certainly not “classic” Some fans have painted him to be. Only in the broadest sense of that word makes the film adaptation of a resemblance to the novel (this is often what happens when one plus 800 - page novel is condensed in two hours time slot). All good about Battlefield Earth has been deprived away, leaving behind the remnants of clich-riddled and that the plot echoes too many episodes of Doctor Who and B-grade science fiction films and characters that are too thin to be called a two-dimensional. The less said about the dialogue, the better. Characters speak more intelligent lines in the Saturday morning cartoons.
Battlefield Earth passes through the Year 3000. Land is no longer ruled by mankind, in fact, it has not been for nearly 1000 years. Our species has been virtually destroyed by the vicious Psychlos who use human beings as chattel in their mining operations. The hero is an incredible name Jonnie Goodboy Tyler (Barry Pepper, with Saving Private Ryan), an independent and rebellious youth from Mountain Colony, which is captured and enslaved, and then turns against his masters. The main reason for the weak to pit people against space invaders, led by the evil Terl (John Travolta) and his equally evil prispeshnik, Kera (Forest Whitaker). Terl interested in the extraction of gold veins secret so he can buy his way out of the Earth; Johnnie agreed that the removal of Psychlos not good enough - he wants them to destroy the planet.
Virtually all of this movie was disappointing. As one would expect from the post-apocalyptic story, it is vaguely reflects everything from the Planet of the Apes for “Omega Man. Thrown for good measure is the pretentiousness of the Kevin Costner ’s The Postman. There is no evidence that those involved in the project may proceed. Travolta, looking like a Klingon abandon one of the Star Trek movies, it is absolutely wrong for the part Terl. Instead the whole, as unpleasant and dangerous, it whiny and petulant. Moreover, it does not have such a deep, thundering bass voice to command immediate respect. Instead, it should sound like … well, John Travolta. He is trying to ham it, but the result leaves us with only giggling and shaking our heads, one wonders why someone has not received Dennis Hopper, John Voight, Snidely Whiplash or Dick Dastardly apart. At the special effects far from special, with the obvious matte paintings and unconvincing CGI portray futuristic Earth where all of the city were explosive. (Note: The document seems to be incredibly durable, since the adoption in 1000 years old, yellowed, it is not at all.) AND editing borders on the incompetent, transforming simple, a simple sequence of actions confusing rush poorly connected images.
Looking at this film, I can not find anything pleased to say about it. I disdained the experience of sitting in a theater, and film was unspooling. This is an instant front-runner for the worst feature of this year, from the very separated from the nearest candidate for a wide margin. After my first, incomplete checks the picture, I assigned a preliminary one star rating. This has been too generous. Fortunately, criticism and non-critics alike were united in one voice for this barbaric entertainment parody. In Battlefield Earth, a person can be an endangered species, but this is a movie that headed for rapid extinction.
