Batman & Robin
As Batman and Robin, the fourth entry in the recent Batman movie series, the franchise returns seems ready to take nosedive. This film, in which another actor in the batsuit, has the hallmarks of a lamentable Continuation - pointless, plodding plot; asinine action; clueless, coma qualifications, and the silent dialogue. Unfortunately for all batfans who waits with baited breath for this one, Batman and Robin was the last dew on the long summer movie season.
Fetishists probably love Batman and Robin. There are rubber nipples, crotch and butt shots, as a dynamic duo (and later Batgirl) claim activity, cyclists and crooks deck in kinky, Clockwork Orange-like regalia, and Uma Thurman, dressed and acting as dominatrix. It all goes well with the film attempts to sensory overload. Director Joel Schumacher took Tim Burton in the dark vision of Gotham City and moved it into overdrive. This is a strange, wild, the original world where gothic skyscrapers, as twisted fingers reach to the clouds, and where batsignal shines brighter than the moon. However, as in the movie as a whole, this aspect is briefly fascinating as they are empty and soulless. It quickly becomes clear that the picture in the sale of a lonely thing is that she looks great, but, in an era when blockbuster budgets usually in excess of 100 million U.S. USA, it would not be special.
Never the less believable Batman or humans. This is not to blame the actor George Clooney - he gives it a game try, but, indeed, his function is to provide the body to place it in costume. We see even fewer Bruce Wayne’s heart than we face. Gradually, over the previous three films, bits and pieces Batman character began to surface. Not so here. All attempts development are required, superficial and not very convincing. The same can be said of Chris O’Donnell in Robina, which goes through more than a spoiled brat with ego problem than an integral member of an unusual family. Then, to further complicate matters, another thin cardboard-hero in the person added Batgirl (Alicia Silverstone), which equals its caped cohorts when it comes to preparedness supplies wisecracks and lack of personality.
In the previous Batman movies, the villains took center stage. First it was Jack Nicholson in the Joker (Batman), and then Danny DeVito in the Penguin and Michelle Pfeiffer in Catwoman (Batman Returns), and then Jim Carrey in the Riddler and Tommy Lee Jones’ Two-Face (Batman Forever). Now, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Uma Thurman added Mr. Freeze and Poison Ivy to the roster. The two most interesting bad guys so far. Schwarzenegger, in addition to looking like a cross between the Michelin Man and Robocop as quite confused about what he is doing. Sometimes he Terminator mode, in other cases, it chomping on cigars, as he is back in the past action hero. Meanwhile, Thurman manage to make a pale imitation of Carrey. Her character mostly female representation in the Riddler (scientific experiments gone awry gives mentally unstable nerd extraordinary powers), but far fewer do. Ibid hulk in substance called Bane (Jeep Swenson), which was reduced to the game to the Poison Ivy Oddjob in Goldfinger. His fate is rather pathetic, which proves that it does not pay to be in the movie prispeshnik like this.
There is indeed a bitter story for the Freeze. He once peace-loving scientist who became obsessed with the preservation of his terminally ill wife, regardless of their value. The forces driving him, thus incredibly complex - too complex to effectively convey Schwarzenegger (there was not one moment when Patrick Stewart has been mentioned in this role?) Or for Schumacher to worry about studying. As a result, Mr. Freeze, in the end, is incomplete who incredibly brutal to smother Gotham City under a blanket of ice.
Old friends, as Commissioner Gordon (Pat Hingle), and all-reliable Alfred (Michael Gough, gamely trying to make a serious statement on the background of all this silliness) returned. Both men have maintained the same person, although the lead character has gone through three revisions. Fabre, who became actress Elle Macpherson is one of the many newcomers, but its role as Bruce Wayne’s girlfriend is so small that it is reduced to the background decoration.
At times, Batman and Robin close to matching the tone v’60 s serial. Only two things are not enough: on-screen cartoon captions ( “pow!” “Bam!”) And Adam West cameo. Those who came to Batman and Robin expect big action sequence will be disappointed. The fight scenes are not interested - they are poorly planned, poorly edited, and disrupted too many one liners. In the hockey team from hell “sequence is a perfect example: it seems endless, but we are never sure exactly what is happening (or why this is happening, for that matter).
Batman and Robin is moving at breakneck pace, but is absolutely nowhere. Somewhere between a quarter and the middle of this movie, then turn repetitive and tedious. We see basically the same fight scene again, three or four times - and that’s not all that impressive for the first time. We have become numb to the glitz and glamour, but going beyond it, we see only in a vacuum. In an effort to put “comics” back in “comic book” Batman Schumacher reduced to the equivalent of a daily newspaper strip - scattered and painfully shallow. Character may deserve greater respect, but, Batman and Robin, he did not understand. And, for that matter, and does not make public.
