The Assassination of Richard Nixon

Assassination of Richard Nixon offers a more compelling than the title of the film. Director Niels Mueller, director making his debut, takes us back to 1974, when Watergate was preparing to withdraw president. Samuel Bicke (Sean Penn) is a seller of furniture that can do no right. His gruff boss (Jack Thompson) is losing patience with its inability to stop the sale, his wife, Marie (Naomi Watts), is desperate to get a divorce, and his plans for a new business with his best friend (Don Cheadle) are threatened, because the bank does not want to provide a loan. As Sam life disintegrates, he gropes someone to blame, and he eventually decides that the source of his woes is the president of the United States. When he sees a news report on the helicopter landing on the lawn of the White House, Sam comes with a bold plan: to hijack a plane and fly it into the White House, killing Nixon and make himself a martyr. But like everything else, Sam screws it.

In Taxi Driver influence is unquestioned. The era of the same. Intensive dissociation from the society of the main characters is the same. The need to lash through violence, the same. Where Assassination of Richard Nixon, is not in their inability to make a convincing character, Sam. That’s irritating and perennial losers whiner who intend to refuse to personal responsibility for their errors, preferring to blame others, and / or society. This is a trial to spend 90 minutes with this person, and Muller in the somnambulant pace did not help.

Let me at those South Park guys! If it is the insufferable character of a good performance, and then Sean Penn is a great one. A lot of his mannerisms as canned, but there are times, such as when Sam experiences volcanic collapse at the furniture store when Penn was galvanized. Unfortunately, most of the time, he’s an accomplice to the film in general torpor. Even great actors “off” films, and this is the first Penn after I Am Sam (maybe he should leave the game characters named “Sam”).

Assassination of Richard Nixon takes its central premise of the historical incident, but most of the material stems from the pens of the scenarios that want to do the seemingly obvious point about political corruption and indifference. Frequent snippets of Nixon on television to add to the heavy-handed approach. They are also trying to improve the verisimilitude of the era. Despite these and other cues, but Assassination of Richard Nixon did not feel as happens during 1970.

This is yet another film where politics trump narrative. Penn and historical context, would generate some interest, but the film ultimately reception is likely to be as chilly as the month in which it receives its theatrical release (December 2004).
