Aquamarine
Do not stretch to say that I am not a member of the target demographic Aquamarine. A good bet that about 90% of the viewers of the film will be girls aged 8 to 14 years. I am sure that the movie works better for them than for me. Nevertheless, all things considered, I must admit that, as part of the meeting Aquamarine was not the most unpleasant recent cinematic experiences I have had. The plot - a clich s-riddled, modern amalgamation of two tales ( “The Little Mermaid” and “Cinderella”) - will not win points for originality, but the script includes some snappy dialogue, clever observations and uplifting message about the importance of friendship. And, although there are a number of stock characters, including bitchy bitch and studly hairpin, the main actors are likable and nicely rounded. Those problems faced by the 20 Century Fox film sells.
Aquamarine is taking place in Florida Beach resort in the last week of the summer. This is a melancholy time for all school-age children, but more for the best friends Claire (Emma Roberts) and Hailey (Joanna ‘JoJo “Levesque), which should be separated oceans and time zones. Hailey mother received a plum job in Australia, and she packed and taking her daughter with her. Claire and Hailey, desperate not to be parted, pray for a miracle. That’s when Aquamarine (Sara Paxton), a mermaid, arrives.
During the storm forced, it has swept in from the sea until the end of Claire’s pool. After receiving over the initial shock to find a girl with fishtail in Claire’s courtyard and two girls link with newcomer. They know a few facts about the mermaid life and knowledge. Mermaids may grow legs, but only when the sun, and on the condition that they stay away from water. They may wish to give someone who helps them. I Aquamarine is in trouble with her dad. She refused an arranged marriage, and is determined to prove that her father emotion mythical “love” does not exist. To this end, it intends to seduce a human boy. She chooses a local lifeguard hunk Raymond (Jake McDorman), as its goal. Claire and Hailey wishing to make a wish that they could be together, agree to help. But there is a difficulty: Raymond also effected by Cecilia (Arielle Kebbel), the resort’s wealthiest, most stuck activities girl, and she does not believe in a fair game.
Most of what you expect to happen in Aquamarine, happens. There is a good little twist near the end, and it allows the film to close at a more mature point out that this may be done differently. Betraying its roots in the older, more familiar history, in the film plays as modern fairy tale, complete with the final moral. Each of the characters has one destiny, in accordance with his / her actions during the film. Nevertheless, the overall predictability of the plot, at least partially offset in breezy approach and brilliant air. Aquamarine may not be deep, but at least it is not leaden.
I am not familiar with the director or any of the versions. This feature Elizabeth Allen first foray behind the camera, and it reflects the right tone for the material. The three young women, all of the stars and create a sense of a vu. Sara Paxton recalls a young Reese Witherspoon. Pop stars JoJo brings to mind some old singer / actress of her Freaky Friday, tentatively paparazzi fodder days. (That would be Lindsay Lohan.), I niece Emma Roberts is Julia Roberts. All three previous loans, but especially those in television, he might not be familiar with adult men.
As “between” girl-oriented movies go, it has its own, but it is not in the same league as the best of them recently, The Sisters of running pants (which boasted act better, stronger direction and more satisfying story). Curmudgeonly critics, and I may not be intoxicated Aquamarine in the froth, but the film is likely to make its goal demographic giddy. So, it is solid advice for young girls and these unfortunate parents caught in chaperone duty. For all others, especially those possessing Y chromosomes, there’s not a lot of interest. But then, you do not plan to see them anyway, are you?
