Apocalypse Now
When a classic not a classic? When he weighed down with the “new” materials, which were deservedly on the cutting-room floor the first time. Frankly, I do not think that anyone fake promising Jabba Hutt on stage add anything to the Star Wars: Special Edition? Pre-SE, he feared presence, which has just said in hushed tones before the return of the Jedi, after SE, it is simply computer-generated blob goo. The same director’s cut on foreigners: Limited Edition DVD. Of course, the robot-controlled machine guns were cool, but we need to see Newt happy-go-lucky prospector interstellar family zipping around the moon bad? Before their planetoid was dark, foreboding, mysterious place, sight unseen to the Marines who landed on him. At LE, the colonists initially is annoying, you can hardly blame foreigners for their rights turning jerky.
Francis Ford Coppola much-heralded Apocalypse Now Redux suffers from the same problem. While it is well and marvelously restored print updated soundtrack are reason enough to catch it in the theater, no one could help but believe that the new scenes detract from the film epic tale.
In its original form, Apocalypse Now equal parts of Joseph Conrad and Joseph Campbell. Loosely based Conrad novel “Heart of Darkness”, it follows Willard (Martin Sheen), a Green Beret captain, through the heart of the Vietnam War in the Cambodian jungle, where Kurtz (Marlon Brando), the rebel colonel he charged with the murder, is holed his Montagnards Army. More than just soldiers on the mission, Willard is a vicious warrior in search of drops with Campbell in the mythos of the writings. While we learn about Willard in doubt through his internal dialogue narration, in the street, a man is all business. Nothing will deter him of his task, not even fatally wounded girl in cold blood with which he carries out a point-blank with his pistol.
Willard unwavering determination in the facade shattered Apocalypse Now Redux new material. When the patrol boat that the adoption of the river dropped off by air cavalry wing Colonel Kilgore (Robert Duvall), Willard plays a frat-house prank on the fearless commander by crawling translation. It is ridiculous, to be sure, especially when Kilgore sends its helicopters to restore its lost-wave rider. But it is also very distracting, a full 10 - minute sideshow to the Willard in the deadly serious commitments. The same place where the crew of the patrol boat stops at some shag Playboy bunnies, which pimps Willard mainly fuel (it’s even insinuated bed that he, too, one of them). Who got time to call when there are trophies difficult “to be done?
Even more sense, a “plantation sequence,” another narrative detour where Willard and his crew to stop and have lunch with a group of well-armed colonial hold documents from the French Indochina. In Heart of Darkness, the excellent documentary about the making Apocalypse Now, Coppola mentioned how he wanted to show the collapse of the old colonial regime. But even if they complain of low supplies, luxurious former colonials have formal, sit-down, six-course dinner complete with numerous bottles of Bordeaux. Men are perfectly laundered costumes, and even sports a spanking-new Lacoste polo shirts. Although they make passionate speeches about Dien Bien Phu, the battle in which the French army was routed (again) in the North Vietnamese, they hardly seemed a desperate bunch. And while on the plantation, Willard again deviated from his vicious pursuit, stopping smoking opium and having sex with sexy, but all know, the forty-something widow. This from the guy who always plaintive submarine crew to get moving and disdainfully refused pot? Huh?
However, Apocalypse Now Redux biggest disappointment plot that was not included. In the five-hour bootleg version of the film that has been circulated fillm-geek underground years (Reel.com ‘Self Jeffrey Wells describes it here, halfway down the page), there are some sharply critical scenes that are MIA in Redux — over Scott Glenn Colby in nature (a fascinating figure plays an actor is not enough), the sticky end of Dennis Hopper in loonball cameraman, and many other scenes Kurtz and Willard conversing in comparison with their one additional sequence in Redux. Coppola Why exclude these criticisms Sequences with the inclusion of so much no matter claptrap? By any measure, a masterpiece Apocalypse Now, a towering provide sight and sound. Apocalypse Now Redux something much simpler - a classic example of how less is indeed more often.
