American Outlaws
Is this what the once mighty West has transferred to the new century? Not so long ago, Westerns and musicals were the two most popular types of film; now, at the dawn of the 21 st century, they all-but-forgotten, and in the rare cases where something like American Outlaws attempts to resurrect West, we want to let the genre moviemakers was located in the world by uploading Hill. Casual movie-goers will be named as a “bad movie”, and will depart Multiplexers nodding sagely about why (they believe), Westerns are no longer made. Aficionados who enjoy everything from Gary Cooper down the bad guys in High Noon, and John Wayne taking last bow in Shootist Sam Peckinpah in The Wild Bunch riding through bloodshed and Butch and Sundance dance through raindrops, American Outlaws will take to be sacrilege.
This film is credited to director Les Mayfield (whose resume includes unpromising Flubber and Encino man), tells a version of the Jesse James story that the history textbooks, which inexplicably ignored. You see Jesse (Colin Farrell), it was not really violent, greedy, charismatic bank robbers. Rather, it is a modern Robin Hood, who gave freely to the poor and downtrodden. He was not womanizer, all he needed was his one true love. And when a member of his gang was shot in the big, bad lawmen sensitive Jesse decided to leave his life of crime so he and his missus can live happily on the eyelids centuries. Now, imagine such a bland character, played by the beautiful but shallow-actor Colin Farrell, and you have a recipe for boredom.
Bringing many more colors on the screen than the scent-o-o-month Farrell is Timothy Dalton, portraying Allan Pinkerton, the not-so-bad-to-on-bone villain who spends most of the film chasing down, and James showing grudging admiration it. For some reason, Dalton chose to play this part, doing an imitation of Sean Connery. At times, he almost cheerfully watch (one of the few films “high” points). If he showed a lot of energy in other places, it may get stuck in the next few Bond movies. Other actors include Scott Caan, Gabriel Macht, Will McCormack, Gregory Smith, and as members of the gang, none of which is as hypocritical as St. Jesse. Kathy Bates has a walk-on Ma as James. Terry O’Quinn and Harris Yulin is the second course the bad guys, the so-called railroad men. And Ali Larter gets Jesse to be the girl without her don whipped cream bikini.
I think the way to watch this film, if you must observe in some masochistic tendency in the force to control you, is to consider it as a comedy, rather than a purely western or action / adventure picture. There are moments when the movie fun - although about 90% of the time, in unintentional comedy. For the most part, intentional humor too stupid to be fun. This dialogue offers a howler after another, such as “If you mess up, because you do not want to listen to the woman, then damn you all!” or “We will teach these thugs, what happens when they challenge righteousness progress!” Qualification does not exist, banal action, and, in one case, Trevor Rabin in “traditional” figure suddenly struck blues / rock number. Maybe in the movie were inspired by A Knight ’s Tale. Somewhere there may be a motion picture to revitalize the west, and this is not it.
American Outlaws was convicted of a crime against cinema, and those who pay money to see it.
