Animator Don Bluth enlisted Burt Reynolds when he established his hero dogs curious fantasy “All Dogs Go to Heaven.” We expected coon dog with hair plugs, but the actor is the voice of shady German shepherd. Reynolds, of course, has a bone to pick his woofish alter ego, an actor who has all the swagger, but his little diffident charm.

Charlie B. Barkin (Reynolds) alone, however, did not sink this animated “Here Comes Mr. Jordan,” an uneven musical fairy tale that depends on the dull just darling. There are many more unsympathetic, it is not enough critters in the Bluth in the nursery. Set in New Orleans junkyard, a children’s rhymes noir also is piranha, rats, gators and other pests indigenous to the bayou.

As in “The Land Before Time” and “The Secret of NIMH,” Bluth gives kiddies a “reasonable scare”, the better to teach them a lesson. “Dogs” is a cautionary fable, when greedy hero learns the dedication of Ann Marie (Judith Barsi), an orphan who communicates with animals, and Itchy (Dom De Luise), his cellmate at the dachshund dog pound.

After breaking the pound, Charlie and Itchy look back Carface (Vic Tayback), Charlie’s partner in a gambling casino. Unwilling to give him “a cut from steaks,” a pit bull in shifty Charlie gets drunk and ices it with the help of his prispeshnik (Charles Nelson Reilly). Suddenly Charlie awakes doggie in the sky, where the pups in pink Halogens are under the direction of magenta whippet (Melba Moore). A quick look around tells Charlie that heaven really arful. After romancing Heavenly Whippet, he steals back to the land, to settle the score with Carface.

Charlie is not Rin Tin Tin himself, but unscrupulous, helpless tekusch .. Among other things, he sired a litter with a collie (Bert wife, Loni Anderson), and then left her alone to raise pastel pups. On a rover okay. He did bring the puppy a couple of pizza, when he won one set in rats races abuse by Ann-Marie Dolittle in authority. Though he pretends that the friendly big-eyed waif, Charlie uses it in line their pockets and shoot down Carface.

At feelings cellblock drama in a collision with Charles Strouse sappy ditties from “Annie” and TJ Kuenster, co-director brother. In a funny exception is the “Let’s Make Music Together” one of the few surprises the film as being a bright King Gator (Ken Page), who sings, and it splashes through Esther Williams-style water ballet.

With 10 writers gnawing at him, little originality left in this story. In hero redemption, as some have, and when a couple of beautiful, the Maples, introduced, we know they will take Anne-Marie. When it comes to children’s movies, a simple plot, perhaps to be expected, but this is a dark tale for children? Bluth says yes, arguing that without evil kiddies history gives a distorted view of life. But he constantly murder Predictions?
