Airplane II-The Sequel

The first five or 10 minutes “Airplane II - The Sequel” really ridiculous - this is ridiculous, I thought maybe this film was going to work. This proved to be premature hopes. New inspirations quickly faded, and “Airplane II,” turns into a recovery, the looting of the same situation, and the characters that made the original “Airplane” so ridiculous.

Very bad, but I can not say that I was not warned. Three weeks ago, the nation’s film critics received letters from Los Angeles public relations agency, advising us that their customers David Zucker, Jim Abrahams and Jerry Zucker, is the true “Airplane”, which has nothing to do Continuation.

This makes sense, since the original “Airplane” was such a berserk, manic celebrations of all kinds zany idea involving aircraft, which they could have enough material left over to the second movie? Nevertheless, there is always the possibility that new talent can come together with new ideas to continue, and this was what I was hoping for the “Airplane II”.

It does not work in this direction. After the film opening burst of comic inspiration, it settles into a pattern, recycling “Airplane” and even repeat some of the jokes (like the one involving Peter Graves as licentious, perverted pilot).

The big difference this time is that this is not a jet passenger aircraft, but a spacecraft to the Moon. After the on-board computer went haywire, the shuttle departs from the course and hurtles through the asteroid belt, as he starts to fall to the sun. (I think the asteroid belt and the sun are in opposite directions, but that, of course, is the last kind of question you should ask in the movie like this.)

It was strange that on the original “Airplane”. Even though the deception, even though the anarchic place from beginning to end, it somehow did hook into our fears of flying. To some dumb, basic level, we were concerned about how the aircraft that was ever going to come back to earth again, and our concern has given the film a narrative chain from beginning to end. Like the original 1970 “Airport” (itself a rather silly movie), the original spoof worked partly because, as we think about airplanes.

“Airplane II” did not think about whether this ship. This view all gags, one-liners, puns, funny signs and scatological cross-references. There is no history. I am not saying this is a movie silly, should have the history, but it would not have hurt.

Another difference between parts 1 and 2 is that the first film was in a position to exploit our association with the stars, in particular, Lloyd Bridges, Robert Stack and Peter Graves. They played against their own images as soon as they can. Part 2 is not feasible to use them, but simply hires them, and they stand around doing dumb things in the script. The first film was satire, and the second is the yuks.

Yet if “Airplane II-V Sequels” constantly exerted on the double bill, in film you would like to see, I would assume, in the theater for the first 10 minutes. In gags involving metal detectors, control - and in the fight. passenger and unloading zone really ridiculous. Perhaps the makers of “Airplane II” exhausted his powers of comic invention at that point. Comedy quite hard work.
