Ablaze

No tribute to firefighters, nor likely thriller, Ablaze is a film that is called simmering fire - it keeps on barely lit and will not go away. The film is an excuse for a group of moviemakers to get together with some stuntmen on fire and blow up a few sets. Sometimes heroics unfold, it seems, to deliver a patriotic message, but he never delivered. These points are simply more opportunities for light stuntmen on fire and blow up more sets.

The film begins with Albert Denning (Ice T), a police officer, and Jack Thomas (John Bradley), a fireman, chasing down a serial arsonist. On the stage is set film as buddy cop movie, I would not have guessed, judging from the movie title and promotion. It turns out I was right in the end. Denning disappears, and the whole scene was just a ploy to get Ice T in the title loans. Marketing genius, perhaps, but horrible way to treat your audience.

The central action revolves around major refinery fire that threatens the entire city. Stuck in the middle of all this is under-funded and understaffed, that the hospital receives many of the initial fire victims. Conveniently, Jack was in the hospital to receive treatment for smoke inhalation. In the firestorm threatened to blow up the hospital, it is time to evacuate race at all.

Ablaze filled inexcusable characters that have no reason to be there other than to raise the body of Coke. Tom Arnold plays a local official. Why is it important? I do not know. The same applies to a television reporter, her camera operator, capricious head nurse and brother Jack. Some of these characters come with a little back story, but none that are an integral part of the film.

I do not know what he is going to watch stuntmen light themselves on fire, but there is something morbidly call about it. However, here a symbol of the transition from film stunt double is too obvious, as shown crosscut prospective victim normal one second before cutting them covered in protective goo, including their heads. While it is necessary for security, and some even moderately clever editing and camera work could have fudged things a bit. But no, director Jim Wynorski (demolition High), seemed to revel in moviemaking stupidity.

Let us not forget the fire. Very much power couple walking group shots a la Right Stuff, but they are not movie stars. This is all about fire and how many Wynorski can burn and blow up. Plus, he received Ice T on credit. Yes, the coup.

Ablaze can meet some B-movie action fans, but I doubt it. Of the bright history of problems, which are equally obvious technical problems, this is one to avoid.
