3:10 to Yuma
Once, served as western, which currently residing in the jurisdiction of Science Fiction: use the allegorical approach to the study of the themes and ideas that may not be quite the traditional picture. It has been more than 35 years since West has been a popular genre, but if done well, it still can stop the mind and transport the viewer to another place and time. Of course, a few modern Westerns take the simplistic view cowboys / Indians-good / bad, and we went further. 3:10 to Yuma is a complex film that bends morals and toys with the notion of the outside as popular hero. This is modern in its outlook and approach - despite the fact that based on the staid 50 - year-old original (which, in turn, was translated from Elmore Leonard short story).
It was in the Old West as we know it: stagecoaches, horses, gunfights, goat cities, which appear to have emerged from nowhere, and the bad guys, who are more dangerous when they smile, as when they were frowning. The only thing missing are the tumbleweeds. Director James Mangold (Walk the line) has studied his John Ford and Howard Hawks. He put together respectable cast of Christian Bale plays opposite Russell Crowe and recognizable names as Peter Fonda, Ben Foster, and Gretchen Mol in a supporting role. It would not be fair to say that this is the best West thus far in 2007, as the only Western thus far in 2007 (though in Murder of Jesse James in the Coward Robert Ford is on the way), but it is worth investing time and money .
For Dan Evans (Christian Bale), the taking out of the notorious Ben Wade (Cro) is a possibility. Dan needs cash to save his ranch - he must ransom money and in the picture. Despite the loss of part of one leg in the Civil War, this sharpshooter Dan and proves an important addition to the escort group Ben at the station, where he will board the 3:10 to Yuma prison, where a hangman waits in the noose. In addition, the group, Dan 14 - year-old son, William (Logan Lerman), and an array hunter named Byron McElroy (Peter Fonda), which has a long-standing feud with Ben. The trip does not go well. The trail is fraught with danger, including bloodthirsty Apaches and the vigilance of the railroad. And all the way to Ben gang, headed by a vicious Prince Charlie (Ben Foster), who wants nothing more than to see Ben free, and those who took his death got death.
Two things importance during the 3:10 to Yuma, and revolve around Dan. As a character, he will not change. Instead, it is the instigator of change in those around him. Dana is the same at the end as at the beginning: a focus on the right things. Justice is his master. He would not kill because it is useful. He would not turn it back, even if he stands to earn a fortune. Dan makes his obdurateness wall against which other crash and break. One of them is his son, which begins with watching the film insulting him, but a growing respect for him. Another Ben, who, suffering from something akin to the Stockholm syndrome, is a grudging respect for the man who rejected his bribe and honor its course.
In a sense, it could be argued that Christian Bale has a thankless job. After all, there is nothing yet to play a stubborn, strictly just a man. Beil, however, leads to the intensity of the role. On the other hand, Crow has plum parts as the villain, which could happen one time, and charming the next. It was in that role Crowe plays so well. Ben bad guy, but it is hard not to like him. In real receive boos and hisses when he appears on the screen Ben Foster, who makes Charlie, as freakish and dangerous as in the five-headed snake. Not only it is poisonous, but it kills for the pleasure of it. Veteran actor Peter Fonda provides links to the old Westerns - his father, Henry, both in its share of them.
This is not the first director Mangold genre effort, although it is his first Western. True to form, but the measure secondary character development and the provision of moral dilemmas. This does not mean the action is not well-planned. 30-minute finale, which includes a tense impasse with Ben gangs, masterfully executed. This is a perfect pace, suspenseful, and ends in a way that is appropriate and satisfying. Watching a movie like this, I can not help but wish that the West will return to favor again. We can use more performances like this.
